The Machinist will be responsible for precision machining of test specimens in accordance with ASTM, CSA, ISO, and other applicable standards. This role involves operating manual and CNC machines, maintaining equipment, ensuring dimensional accuracy, and working closely with our mechanical testing and metallurgy teams.
Key Responsibilities
Machine tensile, Charpy, bend, impact, hardness, and fatigue test specimens from various metals and alloys.
Operate manual and CNC milling machines, lathes, saws, grinders, precision measurement tools, etc.
Prepare samples in accordance with ASTM A370, E23, E8, E190, and other relevant standards.
Verify dimensions using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and surface measurement tools.
Maintain equipment, tooling, and machining logs.
Work with the mechanical testing team to prioritize and schedule specimen preparation.
Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of machining equipment.
Follow all health, safety, and laboratory protocols.
Qualifications
Required:
2-5 years of machining experience (manual and/or CNC).
Strong understanding of machining tolerances, feeds, speeds, and material behavior.
Ability to read technical drawings and interpret ASTM test specimen dimensions.
Experience using micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, etc.
Strong attention to detail and quality.
Assets (preferred but not mandatory):
Machinist Trade Certificate or Apprenticeship (Alberta or Interprovincial).
Experience preparing metallurgical / mechanical test specimens.
Experience in materials testing laboratories (tensile, Charpy, etc.).
Knowledge of ASTM, CSA, ISO standards related to mechanical testing.
