JOB DESCRIPTION
Machinist
REPORTS TO:
Maintenance Supervisor
HOURS:
40 hours weekly. Regular schedule 7:00am - 4:00pm, occasional OT required as needed.
SUMMARY:
The Machinist is responsible for supporting the Maintenance team by carrying out various tasks related to interpretating engineering drawings, fabricating parts, installing, repairing, monitoring, and inspecting industrial processing and production machines and electrical equipment, as well as preventative maintenance to ensure the machines remain operational.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Use blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing files to produce precision metal or composite parts.
Fit and assemble machine parts.
Troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and routine maintenance of various plant machinery and equipment.
Utilize the onsite Preventative Maintenance program to complete assigned work, and enter new requests for repairs, parts, follow-up work, etc.
Installation and retrofitting of complex production equipment; fabricating and welding as required.
Assist with shut down operations to assemble machinery and equipment.
Optimize equipment safety, efficiency, and reliability by participating in continuous improvement projects.
Apply mechanical repair principles and procedures to make sure that machinery runs properly.
Detect defects and excessive wear in machinery and identify slight differences in dimensions and shapes of component parts.
Repair and overhaul electrical and mechanical systems on machinery and replace and align moving parts as required.
Set-up and adjust complex machinery for new patterns and products.
Analyze information to perform maintenance such as cleaning and lubrication of machinery, troubleshooting, and to test running and proper operation of machines.
Confer with management to recommend equipment changes and modifications and in evaluating new equipment.
Read blueprints, diagrams, and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
Install, align, dismantle, and move stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment, fans, tanks, conveyors, generators according to layout plans using hand and power tools.
Operate hoisting and lifting devices such as cranes and jacks to position machinery and parts during the installation, set-up, and repair of machinery.
Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions.
Install, troubleshoot, and maintain power transmission, vacuum, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and programmable logic controls.
Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts.
Operate machine tools such as lathes and grinders to fabricate parts required during overhaul, maintenance, or set-up of machinery.
Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on machinery.
Construct foundations for machinery or direct other workers to construct foundations.
Assemble machinery and equipment prior to installation using hand and power tools and welding equipment.
Ensure that safety policies, quality standards, and standard operating procedures are followed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and moving product.
Ability to lift up to 50lbs frequently (includes low-level, waist level and above shoulder lifting).
Ability to carry/push/pull up to 100lbs frequently.
Forceful gripping.
Work in confined spaces.
Excellent eyesight and depth perception. Prescription eye correction is mandatory for those who require it.
Standing for extended periods of time (+8hrs).
Walking short distances frequently.
Occasional work at heights.
Frequent bending, kneeling, and climbing (stairs/ladders).
Frequent work in high noise level environment with appropriate PPE.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Display appropriate work ethics in the workplace and group settings which provides a positive influence on company workers.
Promptly reports to the Maintenance Supervisor any personal conflicts, which may arise between peers affecting work.
Follows all company policies and procedures.
Responsible for accurately recording hours worked. Punches in and out whenever leaving the premises. No employee should be clocked in when not actively working.
Works as part of a team to maximize productivity and efficiency.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment.
Exposure to the manufacturing environment including exposure to seasonal temperature changes, loud noises, and moving machinery.
Jewellery and loose-fitting clothes not permitted.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Valid Red Seal Machinist certification.
2 years of experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
EQUIPMENT
Required to be provided by employee:
+ Hex key set (metric & standard), combination wrench set (metric & standard), adjustable wrenches (6" & 10"), 6" calipers, socket set (metric and standard), screwdriver set, tape measure, needle nose pliers, utility or pocketknife, flashlight/inspection light, mobile tool bag or kit (packout backpack), steel ruler 6" long, center punch set, feeler gauges, combination square, micrometer, torpedo level, dead blow hammer, dial indicators, bore gauges. Operation of:
+ Lathes, milling machines, saws, grinding machines, drilling machines, boring machines, line borers and portable milling machines, computer, and tablet.
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to include but not limited to, coveralls, safety glasses, steel toe foot protection, hearing protection, Kevlar sleeves and hard hats.
KNOWLEDGE
Strong understanding of mechanics.
Able to fit parts to mechanisms and verify dimensions.
Technical knowledge to read and interpret designs or blueprints of products or parts for products.
Proficient with computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
Working knowledge of SharePoint, web browser and Microsoft Office.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Oral comprehension and expression; Must speak, read, and write in English equivalent to the OECD Level 3 or higher.
MATHMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic mathematical equations with precision and accuracy (basic addition, subtraction equations, count, weigh & measure). Numeracy skills equivalent to the OECD Level 3 or higher.
Accurately read a tape measure.
OTHER SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Intermediate computer skills.

Accurate and highly analytical.
Able to work well in both a team and independently.
Comfortable operating a tablet.
Strong organizational skills
