Job Summary
The Tool Crib Attendant plays a key role in supporting CNC machining operations by managing and preparing tooling, creating inspection documentation, and maintaining tooling inventory. Responsibilities include assembling tools (including heat shrink tool holders), setting tools in holders, uploading and downloading NC programs, and preparing all necessary tooling and documentation in advance of production runs. This position ensures machinists have the correct tools, programs, and inspection data to perform work efficiently and accurately.
Job Responsibilities
Follow the production schedule to stage and prepare all necessary tools, holders, inserts, fixtures and setup sheets ahead of each job.
Participate in lean and continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling and shop efficiency.
Assemble and preset cutting tools in holders using manual methods and precision equipment (e.g., tool presetters, torque wrenches).
Use a
heat shrink machine
to properly install or remove cutting tools in heat shrink tool holders, ensuring correct fit and orientation.
Create inspection sheets based on blueprints and job travelers, including critical dimensions and required measuring tools.
Upload and download NC (Numerical Control) programs to CNC machines, ensuring proper revision control and file integrity.
Work with CNC programmers and machinists to verify that tool and program setups align with production requirements.
Issue, receive, and track tooling and inspection equipment using digital or manual systems.
Inspect returned tools for damage or wear; clean, repair, or coordinate replacement.
Maintain inventory levels and assist in purchasing or restocking tooling and consumables.
Maintain calibration records for inspection tools and ensure equipment is within spec.
Keep the tool crib area clean, organized, and compliant with safety regulations.
Job Requirements
Required:
1-2 years of experience in a machine shop or CNC tooling environment.
Preferred:
Experience with CNC controls (Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Heidenheim) and program transfer tools (USB, DNC, network).
Familiarity with CribMaster, AutoCrib, or similar inventory software.
Technical coursework in machining or industrial manufacturing.
Forklift certification or experience moving heavy tooling/equipment.
Familiarity with various tool holding systems, including
heat shrink
, CAT, BT, and HSK.
Ability to safely operate a heat shrink machine and follow correct heating and cooling procedures.
Understanding of CNC machining, NC programs, and file transfer procedures.
Ability to read blueprints, setup sheets, and inspection documentation.
Experience using measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, tool presters).
Basic computer skills, including Excel, file management, and tool crib software.
Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand/walk for extended periods.
Working Conditions:
Machine shop environment: exposure to heat, noise, lubricants, and metal chips.
Use of PPE including safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe boots is mandatory.
May involve exposure to high temperatures during heat shrink tooling operations.
