Job Description

Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in machine shop estimating and project management.

Primary Responsibilities

Review Customer Drawings & Specifications

Interpret blueprints, CAD models, and technical drawings. Identify materials, tolerances, finishes, and special requirements.

Process & Method Selection

Decide the best machining methods (CNC milling, turning, grinding, EDM, etc.). Estimate machine setup times, run times, and tool requirements.

Material & Resource Costing

Source raw material prices. Factor in tooling, consumables, and subcontracted services (e.g., heat treating, plating).

Labor & Overhead Estimation

Calculate setup hours and cycle times. Apply labor rates, overhead, and burden factors.

Quote Preparation

Build detailed quotes with breakdowns of cost and lead time. Communicate clearly with sales, project managers, and customers.

Continuous Improvement

Update estimating methods as machine shop capabilities and technology evolve. Work with engineers and machinists to refine processes and reduce costs.

Key Skills

Strong knowledge of machining processes (CNC, manual, fabrication). Ability to read GD&T and engineering drawings. Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and quoting software. Strong math, time-study, and analytical skills. Communication skills for coordinating with customers and internal teams.

Typical Background

Journeyman machinist, CNC programmer, or manufacturing engineer experience. 5-10 years in machining/production before moving into estimating. Knowledge of shop floor operations, scheduling, and material markets.

Pay: $70,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
