Job Summary
Excellent opportunity to utilize your expertise in civil engineering and leadership The Provincial Field Services unit is the delivery component of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) annual highway construction and rehabilitation programs and is responsible for direct field administration of grading, paving and sealcoat works throughout the province, covering contracted and day labour projects (planned and emergency response). Field services work encompasses all aspects of those administration services as well as the technical aspects of the three construction disciplines. Job Overview The Construction Engineer is responsible for the development, coordination, communication and application of British Columbia\xe2\x80\x99s highways construction standards, specifications, guidelines, policies, and best practices for construction within the Provincial Field Services business unit. The position ensures quality excellence in the delivery and administration of road construction activities by developing, maintaining, and executing quality management plans including quality control, assurance, and audit procedures. Reporting to the Director of Provincial Field Services this position functions independently in a dynamic and changing environment requiring frequent, swift, and sound responses to field construction inquiries and issues management. The position interacts with a variety of consultants, field staff, construction contractors, project teams, engineering services, communities, special interest groups and other business units within the Ministry. The Construction Engineer is expected to demonstrate strong expertise in developing innovative ways for improving the efficiency, quality, and economy of the delivery of construction projects within Provincial Field Services. Education:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent post-secondary degree
  • Register or immediately eligible* for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC
    • Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional Engineer in another Canadian jurisdiction, and able to transfer that membership to the EGBC within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience directly supervising people and managing operational budgets.
  • Valid Class 5 Motor Vehicle License.
  • You must be willing and able to travel throughout the Province of BC.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 10 years of combined experience in highway planning, design, and project delivery including project management practices and functions
  • Experience leading significant engineering/technical components of transportation projects of considerable scope and complexity
  • Experience supervising and/or providing direction to staff and geographically dispersed teams
  • Experience working with, and providing advice and counsel to, senior management and executives
  • Experience with procurement of contracts and contract management including contract development and administration
  • Preference may be given for BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure experience and/or related experience in field services, highway planning or design and construction.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with extensive and progressively responsible experience in transportation, including considerable management and supervisory experience in managing large groups of staff in a diverse environment. Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry (Note: It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the specific security screening requirements pertaining to the position).
