Job Description

The Emergency Medical Assistance Team (EMAT) was established in 2004 as part of the provincial government's commitment to help safeguard the healthcare system from health emergencies, mass casualties, and infectious disease outbreaks.

EMAT is a mobile and scalable medical field hospital that can be deployed anywhere in Ontario. The EMAT can provide a field hospital that supports triage, primary care, acute care, intensive care and mental health care needs during an emergency. Such deployments may take place in populous or remote, semi-austere environments using field hospital tents or buildings of opportunity. In addition, the EMAT can provide:

Patient isolation in the case of an infectious diseases outbreak; Cold zone medical support and decontamination in the case of a chemical, biological or radiological incident; and Case management and triage of patients in a mass casualty situation.
Note: This is a contract position. EMAT leadership will ensure that an EMAT member works with his/her home organization for the provision of availability during deployments and training events.

Logistics Technicians



Your primary role will be to provide logistics support as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team. At times, you may also be required to perform other duties that contribute to the success of a given EMAT mission. As a member of the team, you must be flexible and willing to act when required.

Major Duties: Logistics Technician



Assist with the maintenance and infrastructure of EMAT assets. Assist with the maintenance and re-stocking of medical consumables. Assist with staging, loading, and transport of EMAT assets during exercises and deployments. Assist with structural set-up and maintenance of EMAT camp during exercises and deployments. Assist with supply management, transportation of staff and equipment, structural set-up, including heating, cooling, and lighting during exercises and deployments. Assist with demobilization and transport of assets during exercises and deployments. Assist with the recovery and readiness of assets after exercises and deployments. Assist with mandatory EMAT training and exercises. Must undergo N95 mask fit testing every 2 years. Other duties as assigned. Required to comply with EMAT/Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre's Policies and Procedures.

Required Qualifications/Experience



High school diploma or GED equivalency and must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. Certified firefighter, paramedic, emergency medical technician, or have relevant logistical support background an asset. Experience in hospital or emergency medical services logistics setting an asset. A-EMCA and/or experience as a Firefighter including Hazmat training an asset. Full G-Ontario Driving License. F/DZ or AZ licenses an asset. Will be required to complete at least 2 warehouse shifts per year.
Any additional skills and certifications considered an asset to EMAT's operations are welcome.

EMAT Logistics Technician Competencies



Proficient, or become proficient, in medical terminology/consumables. Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team and to function independently. Exhibit a safety, tactical-oriented mindset. Physically fit to safely lift heavy objects. Ability to handle a high pressure, stressful operational environment. Ability to problem solve using critical thinking. Ability to prioritize, remain flexible and used good time management. Ability to quickly learn and implement new concepts, skills, and cross train to support the needs of the team. Must demonstrate leadership, problem solving and conflict-resolution skills.

EMAT Immunization requirements



EMAT contractors require assessment of immunization status, completion of routinely recommended vaccine series, and booster doses in accordance with the Canadian Immunization Guide for Health Care Workers (HCW). In addition, HCW may require additional doses or booster doses of routine immunizations, or a change in the routine immunization schedule. Unimmunized or incompletely immunized HCW should receive routine immunizations as appropriate for age as well as vaccines recommended because of specific occupational risks. For EMAT contractors, this includes annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations.
