As a Locomotive Overhaul and Procurement Engineer, you\'ll be a part of diverse multi-disciplinary teams allowing you to both share what you know and learn so you can grow. You\'ll provide engineering and program management support for a variety of locomotive projects, working with other members of our team, supporting: the specification, and oversight of design, manufacturing and commissioning of rail vehicles, with a focus on diesel-electric and electric locomotives, but also including other vehicle types; monitor and manage the design of new vehicles and electrical or mechanical parts; supervise modifications and resolve technical problems; and advise on maintenance activities.

You\'ll be tasked with answering technical and commercial questions from clients as well as leading junior team members with day-to-day functions related to rolling stock engineering.

We\'ll ask you to work on projects that will include consulting services for the procurement of overhauled and remanufactured diesel locomotives and new electric locomotives, as well as other rail vehicles and related projects. As a key team member, you will be involved with design review, project management, manufacturing oversight, field implementation and testing activities . You\'ll have opportunities to communicate and interact with locomotive and subsystem manufacturers and contractors to resolve technical issues. We\'ll rely on you to support the wider team with preparation of technical reports on complex technical equipment problems, failure trends and fleet reliability issues, as well as investigate any part failures or maintenance issues. You will be part of a team that will use judgement-based experiences to evaluate situations and develop solutions, while working independently to achieve individual assignment outcomes while managing your personal workload.

Based in Toronto, the position requires presence on client sites at least 50% of the time, and will require intermittent periods of short term travel to supplier facilities. Hybrid work schedules are possible.

You will also be asked to perform the following:

Complete work to the satisfaction of our clients, while simultaneously ensuring that Jacob\'s HS&E, quality, financial, risk management, business and policy expectations are met.

Work with project delivery leadership who provide oversight and mentoring. Support the development of team members, regardless of individual experiences (both technical and non-technical) through active coaching and mentoring

Support business development activities leading to the award of further contracts. This typically includes client relationship development, project-specific position activities, proposal preparation, orals presentation, and contract negotiation consistent with established business development processes.

May execute special or continuous research in support of a project, collect data and analyze complex problems associated with a project, or departmental projects. For example, being part of a team that may propose and/or evaluate proposed system improvements with regards to availability of proven technologies in the market, risk, cost, integration, and configuration constraints of rail vehicles such as space envelope, power, etc.

Specific job duties will include:

  • Provide project management and technical support to a variety of rail vehicle assignments.
  • Provide Engineering and project management support in preparation of technical specifications for functional/ sub system/ testing/ maintenance & training requirements for rail vehicle or subsystem procurements or overhauls.
  • Perform technical reviews of vehicle and subsystem design for transit and railroad fleets, analyze requirements, and prepare review comments for disposition of Contract Deliverables.
  • Perform oversight and witnessing of factory testing of vehicles and subsystems prior to approval for shipment; log discrepancies and prepare reports for status of system testing.
  • Monitor field implementation and testing activities for a range of rail vehicles.
  • Support System integration of vehicle subsystems and complete vehicles from different suppliers for compatibility and functional performance.
  • Assess performance and specification compliance for vehicles and subsystems.
  • Administrative matters, as work needs are identified, and responsibilities are delegated.
You\'ll be working mainly from home (unless you prefer coming into the office), with the expectation to travel for client /site meetings and occasional team meetings.
Here\'s What You\'ll Need:
  • Bachelor of Applied Science/Engineering (or equivalent academic qualification or industry experience)
  • 10 years\' experience in the rail industry, with some experience involving operations, maintenance, purchase and/or design of equipment which follows AAR, FRA, APTA PRESS and/or Transport Canada standards.
  • Experience with locomotives (diesel electric and/or catenary electric), that includes engineering, manufacturing, testing, commissioning, operations and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with rail vehicle industry standards, systems, and practices.
  • Ability to read, understand, comment on and contribute to technical specifications, engineering drawings and reports, and maintenance manuals.
  • Demonstrated Project Management Experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in multiple project areas and projects.
  • Experience with GM-EMD equipment.
  • EIT, PEng, PMP or a demonstrated desire to pursue.
