The Opportunity:

The Kenora Miner & News is hiring into a temporary full-time position for a western Ontario rural reporter funded through the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI). In this role you will be responsible for pitching, reporting and filing weekly stories that align with the contract agreement to produce breaking and investigative stories on local civic, social and economic issues in Kenora and surrounding areas.

About LJI:

The Local Journalism Initiative supports the creation of original civic journalism that covers the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada. Funding is available to eligible Canadian media organizations to hire journalists or pay freelance journalists to produce civic journalism for underserved communities. The content produced will be available to news media organizations across the country through a Creative Commons licence so that Canadians can be better informed. Created by the Government of Canada in 2019, the Local Journalism Initiative is administered on its behalf by seven administrator organizations, including News Media Canada.

What you\xe2\x80\x99ll do:

  • Work in a remote newsroom environment via Microsoft Teams and Slack
  • Collaborate with the editor in Kenora
  • Pitch daily and feature stories to editors
  • Identify photo needs to editors
  • Build relationships and networks with sources in and around Kenora
  • File stories via WordPress for copyediting
  • share published stories to LJI portal
  • Occasionally travel to northern communities
Who you are:
  • Reporter with degree in journalism or equivalent experience
  • Curious and multi-passionate individual with excellent storytelling skills
  • Embrace fair, balanced and ethical reporting
  • Knowledge of northern Saskatchewan and Indigenous communities
  • Experienced in filing freedom of information requests
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment with the ability to pivot and multi-task
  • Experienced in remote work including the use of Teams
  • Photography skills are an asset
