Live-In Caregiver

. The role focuses on
light cooking

feeding assistance

, all within a calm, respectful home environment.
Key Responsibilities
Feeding & Nutrition
Provide
hands-on feeding assistance
with patient-preferred pacing and cueing.
Follow
swallowing precautions
(dysphagia strategies, texture-modified diets, thickened fluids as ordered).
Maintain
upright positioning
before/during/after meals to reduce aspiration risk; monitor for coughing, pocketing, or fatigue.
Record intake and report changes in appetite, hydration, or swallowing ability.
Personal & Clinical Support
Assist with
bathing, grooming, toileting
, incontinence care, and
oral hygiene
(critical for aspiration prevention).
Safe transfers
and mobility using gait belt, walker, wheelchair, or lift as appropriate; maintain
fall-prevention
measures, monitoring of skin integrity
Repositioning
on schedule to protect skin; observe for redness, pressure spots, and report promptly.
Support
range-of-motion exercises
and positioning per care plan/therapy guidance.
Monitor and document
vitals/observations; provide
medication reminders
(no med administration unless within policy).
Respond to changes using
stroke-aware observation
(e.g., FAST signs, new weakness, confusion, speech or vision changes) and follow escalation protocols.
Cognitive, Communication & Emotional Support
Use
stroke-informed communication
(short phrases, yes/no prompts, visual cues, time to respond).
Offer
companionship, socialization, and stimulation
(conversation, music, light activities).
Practice
respect, patience, and privacy
at all times.
Home Management
Light meal prep
aligned with diet orders and preferences.
Light housekeeping & laundry
to keep the environment safe and comfortable.
Keep documentation up to date and
communicate effectively
with family and the care team.
Qualifications
Certified PSW (Ontario)
NACC Final Theory Exam
completed
Valid CPR & First Aid
Vulnerable Sector Police Check
(within the last 6-12 months)
Immunization record/COVID-19 vaccination
Experience with stroke care & feeding assistance
(dysphagia)
Confident with
safe transfers
, mobility devices, skin care, and fall prevention
