Job Description

The supportive roommate will be responsible to assist two adult females with Down Syndrome to pursue and work towards their goal of living the most independent life as possible in a supported, independent living, private residence

Our family members enjoy swimming, bowling and golf with special Olympics. The supportive roommate will be guided by the goals and objectives, determined in collaboration and consultation with our family member and the parents. The supportive roommate will live in a house purchased by the families in Southwest Calgary. The supportive roommate will be an energetic self starter who will guide the girls in all aspects of independent living.

Key Responsibilities:



Develop a positive and supportive relationship with our family members and support them to create a safe, healthy, and happy home environment.

Work with family member with the grocery shopping for the home. Look at purchasing food items from the perspective of meal planning, healthy food eating habits and cost management.

Support our family members to maintain healthy eating choices and habits at all times. Guide our family member to prepare nutritious meals.

Support activities outside of the home for our family member by working with Community Access workers. This goal is critical to our family members well-being and growth.

Coach and mentor, our family member in appropriate relationship building.

Monitor daily personal care routine and general health and hygiene routines (Ex. reminders to shower, brush teeth). Administer and monitor medications if necessary.

Encourage and influence a well rounded healthy lifestyle by promoting healthy eating, incorporating meditation and exercise into routines (i.e. walks, bike riding etc.) if possible.

Establish a chore chart with our family members for household duties including cleaning dishes after meals, garbage, etc. Our family members may need reminders and minimal guidance to get their chores done well and on time.

Work with the extended supports to get our family member to occasional appointments.

Communicate with our family members in a respectful and age-appropriate manner. Be willing to communicate through texts when needed.

Accountabilities:



Communication: Build strong and respectful relationships with our family, family member and networks

Prepare a month end report, if necessary, detailing events or incidents that occurred positive, or negative.

Confidentiality: maintain confidentiality at all times

Interact in an age-appropriate manner by communicating in a non-intrusive, non-threatening, image enhancing manner.

Safety: Be aware of physical, social, and recreational environments, and taking action to minimize risks and maximize inclusion.

Qualifications and Requirements:



A genuine willingness to want to live with and support our family member as they continue to grow as an independent adult The ability to work independently in unstructured environments and to employ effective time management skills Responsiveness and flexibility to the complex and changing needs of two independent adults requiring support Willing to collaborate with our family and support network in supporting our family member The ability to cook nutritious meals Support our family member to continue learning new skills and develop increasing independence as they relate to managing a home and social life A valid Class 5 driver's license; access to a reliable vehicle and applicable insurance and a clean driver's abstract First Aid and CPR certification is an asset Recent Police/Vulnerable Sector Check
