As Canada\xe2\x80\x99s largest agency serving youth who are homeless, trafficked or at risk, we offer the widest range of services to hundreds of young people every day. More than a place to stay, we provide 24/7 crisis shelter and transitional housing on-site and in the community, along with comprehensive services including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and after-care. Since 1982, Covenant House has supported more than 100,000 young people.

This includes influencing public policy, leading awareness and prevention programs and continually building and sharing our knowledge. Thanks to our donors, who contribute 80 per cent of our $44.2-million annual operating budget, we are able to deliver these comprehensive programs and services.

The Supportive Lodging home is a new model of transitional housing for youth between the ages of 16-24. It is a unique program in that it provides congregate living for up to 4 youth in two separate homes with a live in mentor providing critical on - site support to the youth.

This program will be supporting youth who require some additional support and coaching to prepare them for independent living. Each home will work with a specialized population of youth who face significant barriers in accessing housing. One house will be designated for youth who identify as LGBTQ2S and the second house will be for racialized youth.

The mentor will work collaboratively with the YIT workers who will provide case management support to these youth. The individual in this position will be provided without cost, on-site accommodation plus a monthly stipend. The successful candidate will be responsible to support and implement Covenant House\xe2\x80\x99s principles, program philosophies and policies.

Please note: this role is a live-in role which will require the successful candidate to be onsite 5-7 days.

Responsibilities:

  • To establish relationships with the youth to provide mentorship , support and life skills to the youth as they engage in their transition into independence
  • To document and communicate any behavioral changes/concerns, incidents or unauthorized absences of youth
  • To ensure that the youth are engaging in program expectations
  • To promote positive shared space activities to create a successful communal living experience for the youth
  • To act as mediator for peer challenges and model collaborative problem solving with the youth
  • To conduct house meetings and manage assignment of house chores to youth
  • To work collaboratively with the Youth in Transition worker to support case planning
  • To reside in the home and be available to the youth during designated hours; this will include over-nights and week-ends
  • To be able to commit to a minimum of 2 - 5 hours weekly to program activities
  • To ensure that a safe and clean environment is maintained
  • To monitor and report any house maintenance issues
  • To respond to and manage community relations and issues and report complaints to the manager
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education, preferably in a helping profession (completed or in progress)
  • Previous experience with high needs populations in a mentoring role
  • Knowledge of trauma informed care models and needs of this specialized population of youth
  • Minimum of a 2 year commitment
  • Can be employed full/part time or is a full time/part time student
  • Demonstrated initiative, independence, maturity and critical thinking skills
  • UMAB, First Aid, ASIST, basic computer skills and a willingness to attend other trainings as necessary
