Reporting to the Executive Director, the Literacy Instructor is responsible for offering group classes and individual tutoring services to adult learners to improve general literacy skills and computer skills, as well as building skills for jobs, such as creating resumes, filling out forms or applications, and practicing for job interviews.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS -
Education and Experience
Related post-secondary degree from a recognized institution or a comparable combination of education, training, and workforce experience.
Knowledge of adult education principles and facilitation experience, either tutoring or teaching.
Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
A valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License and access to a vehicle, on an as needed basis.
Experience working with Indigenous peoples and knowledge of traditional Indigenous culture, traditions, teachings and ceremonies, is an asset.
Experience working with individuals who are involved, or have been involved, in the criminal justice system is also an asset.
The successful candidate will be required to provide an up-to-date Criminal Record Check from the Winnipeg Police Service with the vulnerable sector/adult abuse registry search.
The successful candidate must be cleared by Manitoba Justice to enter all correctional institutions and able to pass an enhanced reliability screening with Manitoba corrections.
Must be cleared for access and program delivery in Stony Mountain Institution (Correctional Service Canada).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision/Intake
Supervise students and volunteer tutors as needed.
Conduct continuous intake and assessment of adult learners hoping to gain entrance into the program, making them aware of what the program offers.
Be available for ongoing instruction with adult learners in the program, checking in with each learner at least once every two weeks.
Be available for drop-in instruction at the JHSM office for adult learners in the community or JHSM residents by appointment.
Assist adult learners with accessing literacy resources outside of the program, such as information about adult learning centres in the community.
Provide literacy materials to adult learners in the program.
Supervise volunteers and facilitate weekly literacy classes at the Winnipeg Remand Centre and other institutions.

- Community Partnerships
Liaise with community partners to share information about the literacy program.
Develop literacy activities suited to partners' objectives and client needs.

Collect and update statistical information on literacy clients and programming activities in partnership with the Literacy Coordinator.
Revise intake, assessment, and statistical records in accordance with program needs.
Provide required reports/information as required by funders to the Literacy Coordinator.
Become familiarized with the Manitoba Adult Literacy Program (MALP) Instructor qualifications.
Stay up to date with all courses and certifications required by MALP.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for this position will have extensive experience working directly with First Nations, Indigenous, Inuit and Metis people who have been in conflict with the law. The ideal candidate will also possess experience living/working in the inner city and who self-declare as having lived or family experience of incarceration.
