We are seeking a passionate and skilled Cook to join our team at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, The ideal candidate will have a deep appreciation for indigenous ingredients, techniques, and cultural heritage, and will bring creativity and authenticity to our kitchen.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and cook a variety of indigenous dishes, ensuring the use of traditional methods and seasonal ingredients.
Collaborate with the chef de cuisine and kitchen team to develop and execute the menu and recommend ideas and concepts for menu and special occasions, incorporating traditional influences.
Maintain a clean and organized workspace, adhering to food safety and sanitation standards.
Prepare ingredients for restaurant and banquet menus; washing vegetables, chopping, seasoning meat, preparing bannock, and desserts.
Cook orders according to set standards and food safety standards. Includes handling and monitoring multiple orders, as required.
Sanitize and store food according to FIFO.
Provide a welcoming, safe and exceptional client experience for all clients to the park.
Assist other cooks in preparation of food or helping other team members when needed.
Other duties as required
Provide notification to management of any potential equipment/asset breakdowns or safety concerns
Collaborate with other departments, fostering a positive working relationship across the organization.
Requirements
Proven experience as a cook, preferably in a restaurant setting that highlights indigenous cuisine. A Culinary Arts Diploma is preferred
A minimum two years of relevant experience in a fast paced kitchen environment
Excellent communication skills and a passion for sharing indigenous cultural heritage through food.
Food Safety certification is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
A suitable combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and present a satisfactory drivers abstract.
WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certification is considered an asset
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for long periods (typically 8-10 hours) while working.
Capability to perform repetitive tasks with consistent energy throughout shifts.
Dexterity to handle kitchen tools and equipment efficiently, including knives, pans, and other cooking utensils.
Ability to quickly move around the kitchen, navigating tight spaces and managing multiple tasks at once.
Ability to reach, bend, twist and lift and carry heavy items (up to 50 lbs)
Fine motor skills necessary for chopping, slicing, and preparing food with precision.
Comfort working in a hot and fast-paced environment, sometimes around open flames or hot surfaces.
Additional Requirements:
A satisfactory criminal record check is required as a condition of employment.
Wanuskewin is located outside of Saskatoon city limits and public transportation is not available. Reliable personal transportation is required
