Position Overview

Student Wellness Services is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Licensed Practical Nurse for approximately 15 months.

This position reports to the Manager, Nursing, Student Wellness Services. Student Wellness Services (SWS) is a multi-disciplinary clinic that offers counselling services to students, massage and chiropractic treatments for both staff and students along with both booked medical and psychiatric appointments for students plus a walk in service that both staff and students can access. The person in this position works as a member of the medical team in a clinical setting to provide day-to-day quality health care to students, staff and faculty at the University of Calgary.

This position requires considerable independent judgment, critical thinking and initiative in addition to tact and diplomacy when dealing with patients, staff members and external health care agencies. Working with both family physicians and specialists this position provides nursing assistance as required. There are a number of duties relating to patient care with multiple priorities and a high volume of clients. It is essential to be able to work within a team environment, function independently and to also take direction well. The person in this position is expected to interact with patients and staff in a helpful, respectful, patient and compassionate manner.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Directs patients to examination rooms and ensures room is cleaned and ready following each appointment, maintains an orderly and efficient flow in the clinic.
  • Advises patients regarding health concerns and health education within the scope of practice, and reinforces selfcare directions given to patients by the physicians, as required
  • Reviews medication schedules upon request by the physician, as well as teaching patients the correct use of medical supplies such as crutches, wound care, etc. and provides appropriate nursing assistance to physicians as required.
  • Administers medications as ordered by a physician including controlled medications.
  • Maintains a good working knowledge of medication commonly used and/or prescribed in the clinic.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other health care providers and books tests as requested by the physician.
  • Advises patients as to preparation procedures for various laboratory tests and other investigative procedures.
  • Checks vision, height, weight, blood pressure, etc. for medical physical examinations.
  • Reviews and assesses laboratory reports and informs appropriate persons.
  • Assesses and maintains all medical equipment to ensure that it is in good working condition.
  • Ensures all exam rooms are fully stocked with medical supplies as appropriate.
  • Safeguards and ensures confidentiality of patient information.
  • Triages patients appropriately according to basic triage guidelines.
  • Deals with emergency situations appropriately and timely.
  • Administers allergy injections and monitors for adverse effects.
  • Assists in disposing of biohazardous wastes.
  • Autoclaving of reusable medical instruments.
  • Participates in health education and promotion on campus.
  • Responsible for autoclave and the processing of medical equipment.
  • Responsible for transfer of information to patients that is within their medical record, as requested by the physician, and within the LPN scope of practice according to current privacy laws.
  • Provides follow up to patients as directed by the physician or as required.
  • Assists with minor procedures.
  • Screens calls between physicians and patients.
  • Assists with and administers vaccines according to Public Health Guidelines.
  • Orders medication, vaccines and medical supplies.
  • Documentation of patient care in the EMR and updating patient information as needed.
  • Assists reception in booking appointments and managing patient flow.
  • Actively participates as a member of the Health team.
  • Attends staff meetings as required.
  • Works with a computerized medical records system, and is competent in all aspects of the scheduling and work desk modules.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A member in good standing with a current license to practice with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta and ongoing yearly maintenance of LPN licensing is mandatory for employment.
  • Current Health Care Provider CPR certification is required.
  • Certification for injectable drug administration is required.
  • Current first aid certification is preferred.
  • 3-5 years experience in a clinical setting preferably in a medical clinic is an asset.
  • A strong team player who works well within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Immunization experience required
  • Travel immunization administration knowledge required
  • Rabies immunization clinic experience and knowledge preferred
  • Volunteer management experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of AHS Public Health operating procedures and the health care system is an asset.
  • Experience in the Public Health setting is an asset.
  • Ability to function well under stressful situations.
  • Excellent computer skills, experience in computerized medical software programs is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of privacy laws in Alberta including the Health Information Act and the Freedom of Information Act is an asset.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with students, staff and colleagues.
