Job Summary

Our National client is looking for a Library Technician for a temporary assignment in their Library and Publication Services division. The successful candidate is expected to start on November 19th, with a work schedule of Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.

The successful candidate must be able to lift up to 20 lbs as there will be some involvement of lifting and moving heavier boxes. The work also involves frequent interruptions, multiple demands and interactions, unforeseen requests, short and tight deadlines and frequently adjusting priorities and plans to accommodate last minute requests all, of which could create tension.

Job Duties:

  • Perform daily mail and shelving duties
  • Assist with reference requests from internal and external clients
  • Assist Technical Services with cataloguing, processing, and serials indexing
  • Assist with document digitizing of legacy NEB publications
  • Other work activities in support of library services include maintaining statistics that report on quality and volume of work, participate in team initiatives, maintains circulation records, assists in maintenance of the library collection, and working on projects as required
  • Perform other duties as required
Job Requirements:
  • Completion of secondary school education
  • English Essential
  • Minimum of one year experience in working with Library Catalogue software (e.g. SydneyPlus)
  • Minimum of one year experience in dealing with internal and external clientele
  • Minimum of one year in working with computer programs and systems (e.g. MS Office, on-line systems and databases)
  • Minimum of one year working in a Library environment
  • Successful completion of some courses in Library and/or Records Management
  • Experience taking inventory of information holdings and producing a spreadsheet from this information
  • Experience cataloguing bibliographic records
  • Experience digitizing paper and/or micrographic documents
  • Experience indexing/profiling document in a document management system
  • Previous experience with the Canadian Federal Government would be considered an asset qualification
  • Knowledge of cataloguing standards established by the library community including:
  • Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and/or Resource Description and Access (RDA).
  • Library of Congress Classification covering subject headings and classification numbers

  • Sound organizational skills i.e. able to establish, maintain and adjust as required files and records both electronically and manually
  • Strong detail orientation skills i.e. able to self-correct as required and to capture errors without being prompted
  • Strong multi-tasking skills i.e. able to attend to incoming requests while maintaining focus on workload demand at hand
  • Strong customer service skills i.e. understand how to respond to clients requests, determine and confirm needs and communicate action steps
  • Communication skills both oral and written i.e. able to communicate effectively with clients, peers, staff members, and external stakeholders
The successful candidate must be able to pass a criminal background check, and Possess, or be eligible to obtain, a passport
