THE

ROLE


The Library Technician, Circulation is responsible for providing a variety of library support services by performing duties related to patron and circulation services, technical troubleshooting and support, library promotional design, activities and displays, community engagement initiatives, committee work, and the general order, maintenance and safety of the library. This position is a public-facing position that regularly interacts with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the public . Spending approximately 50% of their work time at the service desk. The typical duties listed below are distributed among four staff members. These duties are sometimes shared, sometimes changed among staff, and can be distributed flexibly according to employee strengths, interests, and capacity. The circulation team works together with a large degree of communication and cooperation to support the goals of the University and Library. The Library Technician, Circulation is expected to be a full participant, along with the rest of the library team, in the defining and achievement of library goals.

TYPICAL

DUTIES



Provides circulation services to all library patrons, including opening and closing the library, checking materials in and out, registering and updating patron accounts, and assisting with, at times complex printing, troubleshooting and scanning support.

Educates patrons on library services, policies and procedures, responding to inquiries in person, online and by phone, and referring questions to appropriate staff as needed.

Maintains the Integrated Library System (SITKA - Evergreen), under the supervision of the Library Operations Coordinator, ensuring data accuracy, troubleshooting issues, and protecting patron privacy. Pulls usage reports for internal and external reporting requirements.

Oversees and provides technical support for library equipment and software, including specialized KIC scanners and printers.

Deliver research assistance and support, as needed, in person, via email and via AskAway, the provincial virtual chat research service. Updates and maintains library web content and online subject guides (LibGuides).

In collaboration with the Marketing and Communications team, designs and manages social media content, to promote library services and events.

Maintains the library's physical space and collections, including shelving, signage, labeling, and conducting inventories of materials, archives, and special collections, ensuring the library remains well organized. Supports a safe, inclusive library environment by using discretion and judgment to triage students in distress and address disruptive or threatening behaviors, directing individuals to appropriate resources and notifying security when needed.

Assists with the creation of collection displays, featuring staff picks, new arrivals and archival materials.

Participate in committees within and across ECU as well as at relevant external organizations and contributes to developing library guidelines, procedures and strategic planning initiatives to enhance user experience.

Plans and leads community engagement events such as orientations, games, art-making sessions, supply swaps, and collaborates with campus and community partners on library events.

Assists with special projects such as digitization and data transcription of library and archival materials.

Assists in the hiring, training and mentoring of new staff, research assistants and student monitors as required.

Performs other related duties as required.




Required Qualifications


Two-year Library Technician Diploma from a recognized post-secondary program. 3 years post-secondary education from a recognized University in a related field. Minimum three years' experience in a library or customer service environment. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Work experience in a post-secondary setting an asset. Sound knowledge of art + design. Experience with integrated library systems (ILS), experience with Sitka Evergreen is an asset. Experience performing bibliographic searching, preferably in a post-secondary environment. Experience providing technical assistance with library equipment (printers and scanners). Experience providing intermediate to advanced assistance with Microsoft 365 and Adobe Products. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with faculty and staff, and to work patiently, tactfully, and effectively with students and other library users. Strong interest in service-oriented work, including the ability to receive and resolve requests, inquiries, and complaints with courtesy and good judgment, while maintaining patron privacy. Strong problem-solving skills. Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment. Ability to work with accuracy. Ability to assist with troubleshooting printing booklets, preparing documents for printing. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a team member. Ability to work independently, at times without supervision e.g. evenings and weekends. Physical stamina and mobility to permit lifting, carrying, and moving heavy objects (up to 14 kg).
