Role



Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) is an innovative library system with one of the highest per capita usage rates in Canada. Our vision is to inspire literacy, lifelong learning, and community enrichment for all. Serving more than 380,000+ residents in the Greater Victoria area, we provide library service to 10 municipalities.



The Library Services Librarian II will provide and support program delivery, information services, reader's advisory, and digital assistance, as well as leadership in ensuring the provision of customer service.

In addition to branch-based librarian responsibilities, each position will be assigned to a portfolio to support the community-inspired library service model. Portfolio assignments are system-wide in scope and are subject to change.



Education and Experience



Our ideal candidate will have the required education and experience:


A completed MLS or MLIS degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited library program One year's experience as a Library Services Librarian in a public library An equivalent combination of education and professional-level experience may be considered

Portfolio Description:

The Emergent Literacy portfolio plays a vital role in the coordination and delivery of literacy-based services for children from birth to five years old and to parents and caregivers. The scope of this portfolio includes coordination of Baby Times, Family Storytimes, GVPL's Family Literacy Week, Summer Reading Club for young children and other early literacy programming. The portfolio also provides support to frontline staff in the delivery of readers' advisory. Collection oversight includes GVPL's 100 Books to Read Before Kindergarten, StoryWalk kits, SkillBuilders kits and other kits for young children. Another key role is coordination of outreach to schools and community agencies including Island Health Units, Neighbourhood Houses and Books for Breakfast. Other community engagement includes representing GVPL on local early years literacy committees, tables and task

forces.

The Arts, Culture & Heritage portfolio plays a vital role in the coordination of arts, culture and local history services and plays an important role in helping GVPL reach its strategic goal to celebrate the unique talents of the community. The scope of this portfolio includes the coordination of art and historical programs, film and musical events, pop culture programming, genealogical services, and art walls in the branches. This portfolio plays a key role in GVPL's participation in GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives & Museums) sector initiatives.

Portfolio Description:

Adult & Teen Literacy portfolio plays a vital role in the coordination and delivery of literacy-based services for adults and teens. The portfolio has a key role in engagement with Victoria's active literary community, involving several key partners including the Victoria Writers Festival and the Victoria Book Prizes Society. The scope of this portfolio includes the coordination of author events, Booksmacks, Summer Challenge, writing workshops, literary contests including the Tiny Stories Contest and the Teen Writing Contest, poetry programming, participation in Freedom to Read Week, as well as providing support to customer service staff in the delivery of readers' advisory. This portfolio participates in the selection process for the City of Victoria Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate and leads the library's engagement with both the Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate.

The Information and Digital Literacies portfolio plays a vital role in bridging the digital divide by leading access to programming and skilled support tailored to community needs. It inspires the discovery of emerging creative technologies. The scope of this portfolio includes computer and technology classes for all ages, Assistive Services technology, DigiLab for teens, One-on- One sessions, epublishing, working with vendors, emerging technology projects, supporting front line staff so they are prepared to provide patrons with basic device help, supporting programmers in delivery of tech-related programming and outreach, and exploring and advocating for emerging tech trends and services.

The Cultural Communities portfolio plays a vital role in building inclusive and welcoming communities with a specific focus on the diversity in our community that exists in multiple identities including race, ethnicity, culture, linguistic origin, gender identity and sexual orientation. The scope of this portfolio includes services and engagement with newcomers to Canada, Indigenous communities, members of the LGBTQ2S community, and coordinating programming for seasonal and holiday celebrations. This portfolio works closely with a number of partners and is involved in many community events.
