Payband: This position is paid at Payband G.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., with some evenings and weekends, as operationally required.
Position Summary: Under the direction of the Manager, Library Learning Commons User Engagement, the incumbent is responsible for the provision of information services and for connecting students with learning strategies and inclusive technology. This includes regular shifts on the LLC desk to support the research needs of students and faculty, as well as introducing students to resources which will allow them to practice and/or apply the skills necessary to effectively manage their time, take notes, study, and prepare for evaluations such as tests. The incumbent also works with the Learning Skills and Adaptive Technology Specialist to maintain and organize computer hardware, software, and other inclusive technology devices for students and staff, as well as providing training on inclusive technology to all campus locations and providing learning materials in alternate formats, as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Research Assistance
Conducts reference interviews and handles in-depth reference inquiries in person, by phone, chat-service, and email and guides patrons to sources of information, such as the library catalogue, scholarly databases, internet resources, government publications, e-books, and a variety of print and media resources
Demonstrates, to patrons (1:1 and in groups), the use of all library resources, regardless of format
Provides patrons with basic help in using statistical data such as that found within the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) collection
Performs in-library research consultations by demonstrating the retrieval of resources and providing basic guidance as well as specialized research assistance
Promotes and supports academic integrity and imparts expertise on citation formatting
Encourages faculty to meet with librarian when further in-depth research or curriculum support is needed or requested
Performs library orientation tours as required
Plans and coordinates relevant LLC-related events with colleagues in support of student success
Inclusive Technology Support
Provides demonstrations and training to students individually and in groups in the use of specialized technology such as text-to-voice and voice-to-text adaptive technology, scanners, electronic language guides, personal FM systems, and digital recorders
Remains aware and current on new developments in the field of adaptive technology. Advises Counselling and Accessibility Services staff on new developments in adaptive technology and recommends technical aids that may benefit students with disabilities
Installs, and inventories hardware and software in the Test Centre and other College labs, and tracks software licences used. Maintains operation and availability of hardware and software by performing minor repairs in the Test Centre and troubleshoots equipment failures to determine need for repairs and maintenance
Travels to area campuses, as needed to perform similar duties and/or coordinates installation with other computer technicians
Provides learning materials for students identified by Counselling & Accessibility Services in alternate formats
Creates and maintains catalogues/guides for Inclusive Technology
Offers guidance and training on learning strategies, including time management, notetaking, studying, and preparing for evaluations such as tests, to students either individually or in groups
Outreach:
The incumbent shares in the responsibility with the Outreach Specialist(s) to develop and deliver presentations and workshops for diverse student user communities by: Partnering with and to other college departments to support the success of and to promote the services of the LLC as supportive of inclusive technology
Qualifications:
Post-secondary 2-year diploma in Library and Information Technician or a related field
Minimum 3 years of public services experience in an academic library using advanced consultation and research skills. This includes helping customers with information searches, including scholarly databases, catalogues, statistical information (i.e. StatsCan) and the internet
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Experience using reference interview techniques in an academic library environment
Demonstrated superior customer service skills
Demonstrated ability to perform research at a post-secondary, bachelor-level/postgraduate certification level
Ability to facilitate engaging workshops about learning strategies and/or adaptive technologies
Relevant experience required working with clients with disabilities, including but not limited to learning disabilities, visual, physical, psychological, auditory, and medical disabilities
Experience with and technical knowledge of inclusive technology and specialized software used by persons with disabilities
Proficient with standard operating systems and general office software
Working knowledge of general computer networking, including domain structures, cabling, imaging/cloning, and basic troubleshooting is desirable
