Chatham-Kent Public Library (CKPL) has an opening for a temporary part-time Library Assistant 2 at the Blenheim/Merlin Hub. This is a temporary part-time position of 17 hours per week. This position is for a period up May 2025. Preference will be given to candidates who are current CUPE 12.2 union members.Job descriptionThe Library Assistant 2's primary responsibility is to assist with the daily operations of the branch to provide information resources and services to CK communities. The Library Assistant 2 will be responsible for assisting with circulation services, reference assistance, reader's advisory, community programming and outreach services, monitoring daily operations and reporting monthly site activities.Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies
  • Circulation: place holds and renew material; register and renew patrons, edit borrower records; collect fines and other payments; check materials in and out; complete or assist patrons in completing interlibrary loan, purchase suggestion and literary angels forms
  • Collections maintenance: access returned materials; sort/prepare material for shelving; identify gaps in local collections; assist with assembling and shipping rotations to branches and deposit libraries
  • Outreach and programming: assist with display and promotion of library resources and materials; assist with implementation of local programming; represent library at events and local organizations
  • Reference services: provide reader's advisory assistance; assist with online catalogues, library website, online accounts, computer stations, microform machines, photocopiers/printers/scanners, mobile devises, wireless access
  • Assist with the collection of monthly statistics and reporting
  • Actively participate in Municipal and Library training
  • Follow standard policies, procedures and practices
  • Handle telephone and email inquiries in a professional and timely manner, directing patrons to appropriate staff and resources as required
  • Assist with monitoring cleaning and office supplies and request replacements when needed
  • Demonstrate the Library's mission, vision and values through day-to-day activities.
  • Assist with the marketing and promotion of resources and services
Essential qualifications
  • College diploma (minimum of two years)
  • Minimum two years public service experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate with the public, staff and administration in a clear, friendly and effective manner that encourages dialogue and interaction
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, exhibiting courtesy, sensitivity and responsiveness in behaviour and tone when interacting with patrons and staff
  • Awareness of Library resources and services
  • Ability to express self to others in a way that conveys information accurately and consistently both written and verbal
  • Strong problem solving skills that promote solution based resolution
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Basic information literacy skills
  • Proficient in the use of integrated library systems for circulation and cataloguing functions
  • Intermediate Internet and research skills
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or other similar software program)
Other qualifications
  • Experience working in a school or other library environment an asset
  • Experience working with people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences an asset
  • Experience working in a customer service setting an asset (e.g. working in a team environment, providing tours and orientation, face-to-face, and handling complaints)
  • Experience organizing and delivering library programs an asset (e.g. preschool/story time; adult focused programs; computer/technical instructions; class visits, etc.)
  • Experience with community-based programming an asset; preferably in an educational, recreational or social services environment
  • Experience with marketing and promotion of resources and services an asset
  • Experience with library circulation processes and procedures, reader's advisory, and reference and research an asset
  • Experience in classifying documents (alphabetical, numerical, alphanumerical) an asset
  • Experience searching the internet, in order to answer basic queries from library customers is an asset
  • Experience with mobile technology, and training customer on mobile technology an asset
  • Experience using Library virtual services (e.g. hoopla, Libby/OverDrive) an asset
Certifications, memberships, licenses
  • Preference given to candidates who have an EXCEL (SOLS program) certificate or other library related courses
Work environment/hours of work
  • This position will work indoors
  • This position works weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend hours
Driver's licence/vehicle requirementsBecause this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's licence with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.Background checkSuccessful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check. Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment.Essential physical and/or safety requirements
  • Physical stamina, flexibility, good physical health and the ability to lift 11.4 to 15.9 kilograms (25 to 30 pounds) are a necessity, as is the ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, kneel and reach
  • Bending: frequent stooping, twisting, kneeling, crouching, squatting (4.05 to 13.64 kgs or 10 to 30 lbs) (retrieving items, programming, shelving materials, processing materials)
  • Walking: constant walking on level surface (movement around library)
  • Reaching: constant handling (up to 4.05 kgs or 10 lbs) (books, binders, supplies, shelving material, circulating/processing material)
  • Standing: frequent standing inside (working at circulation desk; work outside/outreach)
  • Hands: frequent gripping, mousing; constant frequent fine finger dexterity (up to 4.05 kgs or 10 lbs) (keyboarding, lifting books or other papers; circulation; features on the computer)
BenefitsThis temporary part-time position will 15% in lieu of benefits upon completion of a 300 working hours probationary period, as per the CUPE 12.2 collective agreement.
