Branch Librarians are responsible for the overall operations of the local library branch.
They implement current information technology in all aspects of their work including circulation functions, record keeping, reporting, and communications. They coordinate and implement community programs, services and promotions in the local community in collaboration with the Local Library Board. They are supervised and report to the Regional Branch Manager or designate while working with considerable independence. Throughout their work, and particularly in serving the public, they are required to exercise judgment based on knowledge of the organization of the regional library and its policies and procedures.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Carry out all aspects of prescribed circulation, and registration procedures by means of current information technology supports
With the assistance of library staff, board members and volunteers develop and maintain an active public relations program
Coordinate and implement a full range of library programs and services for all ages
Maintain competency in the use and operation of multiple information technology devices and applications
Manage designated social media accounts
Utilize HQ resources (I.e. Makerspace Kits, Literacy Kits, Book-Club-in-a-Bag Kits, Online Databases) for public programs and services on a regular basis, throughout the year
Assist patrons in the use of library resources and equipment
Shelve library materials and maintain orderly shelves and storage areas
Conduct regular weeding of the local branch collection
Carry out procedures for the regular exchange and transfer of library resources
Under the direction of Personnel Manager or designate, hire, train and supervise assistants
Maintain regular, relevant and timely communication with HQ, staff and the Local Library Board
Keep all necessary statistics and receipts and provide reports to HQ and/or the local library board as required on time
Supervise the use of the public library computers
Supervise the use of the library space, equipment and furnishings
Maintain orderly and safe branch library service
Act as secretary (non-voting) of the local library board
Select appropriate materials for the branch collection as directed by HQ
Other duties as assigned by their branch supervisor or designate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Grade XII or equivalent; experience in serving the public; experience and the ability to design, promote and deliver creative and effective programming for all ages; competent in the use and operation of multiple information technology devices; demonstrated oral and written communication skills; accuracy in keeping records; good organizational skills; ability to learn and work independently; ability to effectively train and supervise staff; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships displaying judgment and tact with staff, trustees and the general public; maintain the confidence and support of the local library board; physical fitness allowing the lifting and moving of boxes/bins of library materials (up to 50 pounds); must be able to provide a criminal records check; ability and willingness to travel to attend and participate in workshop in-service and training sessions.
