Job Description

The National Judicial Institute (NJI) is an independent, bilingual, not?for?profit organization, based in Ottawa and Montreal, with a mandate to provide continuing education to members of the judiciary across Canada. An acknowledged world leader in the design and delivery of judicial education, the NJI also shares its judicial training expertise abroad. In its international work, the NJI seeks to strengthen the rule of law through judicial education and judicial reform.



Since its inception in 1988, the NJI has offered in-person programs and a wide range of digital resources designed to foster judicial excellence. As part of its curriculum, the NJI delivers over 70 in-person judicial education programs each year. The NJI's digital resources include self-study courses, Electronic Bench Books, podcasts, videos, judge-facing tools, and more. Alone or in partnership with courts and other organizations, the NJI is involved in the delivery of the majority of education provided to judges in Canada.



The NJI is looking to fill the indefinite position of Legal Translator. This position is based in Ottawa and requires fluent bilingualism in French and English.



RESPONSIBILITIES



Under the supervision and guidance of the Director, Governance, the Legal Translator will assist their colleagues in ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and style of language products. This includes the provision of in-house legal and general translation, the revision and correction of external translations and machine or computer-assisted translations, and the review of governance, communications, and education products for language accuracy.



Specifically, the responsibilities of the position include:



??Legal Translation?

1. Provide in-house legal translation services from English to French for the NJI's products and communications (program materials, correspondence from the Office of the Chief Judicial Officer and Chief Executive Officer, web content, etc.);

2. Provide in-house translation services from English to French for NJI internal documents (e.g., internal governance committees and policies);

3. Work collaboratively with their colleagues and assist them with drafting French-language communications;

4. Support and assist the development and implementation of machine and computer-assisted translation within the NJI; and

5. Proofread, revise and correct external and machine or computed-assisted legal translation.



??Proofreading and Editing?

1. Check French versions of final print-ready or digital products for accuracy and compare them to English versions. These may include, but are not limited to, publications, web content, marketing materials, mass emails, videos, and PowerPoint presentations;

2. Check French versions of final print-ready and digital products, as above, for consistency and style in line with the NJI French Language Style Guide; and

3. Add, verify, and update hyperlinks, and check references in French language products.



Translation Coordination?

1. Provide support to the Translations Coordinator, when requested; and

2. Coordinate translation for special projects, as required.



??Administration?

1. Contribute to the maintenance the NJI French Language Style Guide;

2. Maintain terminology glossaries;

3. Work collaboratively with colleagues to assist with other administrative tasks, such as following up on record keeping, process documentation, etc.; and

4. Assist with other projects, as defined.



QUALIFICATIONS



Essential

1. Bachelor's Degree in? linguistics, translation studies, or related field, and/or specialization in legal translation (or an equivalent combination of experience, training, and education);

2. Legal translation certificate;

3. Minimum of 3 years of legal translation experience?;?

4. Fluently bilingual in French and English (R/W/O); and?

5. Proficiency with Microsoft 365.?



Desirable

1. Membership in an association of translators in Canada;

2. Knowledge of court jurisdictions and structure;? and

3. Proficiency in Project Management Software, such as Asana.?

COMPENSATION



Compensation is to be determined at the time of hiring, based on the successful candidate's experience and profile, within represented salary band 6: $67,637 to $84,546 annually.
