Job Description

The Labour Relations Board is an independent, administrative tribunal established under the Labour Relations Code. The Board mediates and adjudicates labour relations matters related to unionized workplaces. The Employment Standards Tribunal is an independent, administrative tribunal established under the Employment Standards Act. The Tribunal adjudicates appeals of determinations issued by the Director of Employment Standards.

Legal Counsel acts both as a legal advisor to and as a representative of the Board and Tribunal.

Positions available:

There is one full-time legal counsel position available.

Remuneration:

The legal counsel position falls within the LRB Staff Association and terms and conditions of employment are set out in the LRB/LRBSA collective agreement.

Under the terms of the current collective agreement, wages and benefits include the following

Wages established by the BC Government Legal Counsel salary grid based on year of call. A copy of the current salary grid is attached

Health and dental benefits

Defined benefit pension plan

The ability to work a nine-day fortnight

Staff are also able to work remotely, as operational needs permit, in accordance with the LRB's Remote Work Policy and Agreement.

Job Requirements:



In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience criteria outlined below:

Degree in law from a recognized university

Membership in good standing with, or eligibility to join, the Law Society of British Columbia

Up to of 10 years called to the bar preferred

Knowledge of the Labour Relations Code, the Employment Standards Act, the Administrative Tribunals Act, the Human Rights Code and other legislation relating to labour relations, employment standards, and administrative law

Knowledge of administrative law principles

Demonstrated experience in providing advice and/or preparing opinions on labour relations, employment standards, and administrative law

Demonstrated experience in legal research, writing, and analysis

Experience appearing before the BC Labour Relations Board, the BC Employment Standards Tribunal, and/or a labour arbitrator.

Experience appearing before the BC Supreme Court and/or the BC Court of Appeal

Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
