Job Description


The Catholic Children\'s Aid Society of Toronto is seeking to fill a Legal Counsel position on a

temporary

basis,

for approximately eight (8) months,

to provide comprehensive legal representation, consultation and training in all matters related to the execution of the mandate of the Society under the Child and Family Services Act.

Duties Include:
Providing legal consultation and advice to social work staff and management on all legal matters relating to child welfare including the following:

Reviewing and drafting court documents;

Advising on legal proceedings, interpretation of

Child, Youth and Family Services Act

and other relevant legislation;

Representation in court in both contested and uncontested matters including: adjournments, contested motions, motions for summary judgment, uncontested hearings, motions for disclosure, and trials;

Representation at expunction hearings, CFSRB hearings and related tribunals;

Reporting Court dispositions for file records and statistical purposes;

Review of file for disclosure purposes;

Preparing and presenting in-house legal training programs for the Society;

Working in a safe manner in accordance with the Society\'s Health and Safety Policies and procedures and all relevant legislation.

Working in an Anti-Racist, Anti-Oppressive workplace and complying with ARAO policies and practices.

Qualifications Required

LL.B. Degree; called to the Bar in Ontario; membership in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada;

Experience as Legal Counsel to a Children\'s Aid Society, or related experience;

Excellent knowledge of the

Child, Youth and Family Services Act

, Family Law Rules and related legislation;

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;

Ability to advocate on behalf of the Society in the best interests of children and families;

Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, integrating the values in the CCAS Mission Statement, the principles of equity, justice, non-discrimination and accessibility into practice, service delivery and team relationships;

Skill in using technology as part of daily communication and management, including but not limited to voice mail and e-mail systems.
