Responsibilities

PRIMARY PURPOSE



Provides legal advice, opinions, options and recommendations to the organization on a range of legal issues involving moderate scope, risk and sensitivity in various areas of the law.



KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES



Provides legal advice and expertise to management and staff across the TransLink enterprise.



Analyses, researches and prepares legal opinions, options and recommendations on a range of legal issues of moderate scope, complexity, risk and sensitivity in various areas of the law, involving application of legislation, case law, legal precedents and guidelines.



Drafts legal documents in areas of moderate complexity, risk and sensitivity.



Assists senior legal staff on elements of tasks and projects involving larger scope, and higher risk and sensitivity (e.g. conducting legal research, preparing draft legal documents for review by senior legal staff).



Works with the Director, Insurance & Claims to identify areas in which moderate risk, litigation, potential claims and losses may arise, and provides advice on such topics. Includes review and approval of indemnity provisions with oversight from Senior Manager, Legal Services.



Participates in development of legal compliance programs, corporate policies, standards, and guidelines related to moderately complex legal issues to mitigate risk.



Maintains up-to-date knowledge of legislative amendments and key trends in case law and makes recommendations relevant to TransLink.



Exercises judgment and legal expertise in the accurate interpretation and application of legislation and case law.



Retains, instructs and liaises with external counsel on moderately complex legal assignments; and also monitors and manages related costs, ensuring funds are used efficiently within budget guidelines.



Provides technical guidance to paralegal staff.


Qualifications


------------------




EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:



The requirements for this job are acquired through a bachelor degree in law, and must also be a practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia, plus a minimum of 5 years of related experience (including 1 year of articling after graduation from law school) in a medium to large law firm and/or corporation, involving practice in a range of legal areas.



OTHER REQUIREMENTS:



Working knowledge of the law in a developing range of areas such as corporate/commercial, contracts, real estate, insurance, policing, criminal, labour and employment, human rights, statutory interpretation, environmental, freedom of information, and First Nations.



Working knowledge of TransLink's governing legislation, governance structure and mandate, organizational structure, transportation and financial plans, services, labour environment, asset ownership structure, and relationships with stakeholders



Solid analytical skills to resolve moderately complex problems, develop and recommend creative solutions, and objectively evaluate options to weigh out risks and benefits.



Developing ability to persuade and negotiate with others using advocacy skills to comply with legal requirements, even under difficult circumstances.



Solid oral and written communication skills.



Ability to draft moderately complex contractual and ancillary documentation that meets the needs of business units.

Recruitment Process: An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process. Rate of Pay


---------------




Salary: $124,888 - $187,332 per annum (Actual salary offered will be commensurate with education, experience and internal parity).
