About the role

We're looking for a legal counsel to join our growing corporate legal team! Key accountabilities include:

  • Act as legal counsel on behalf of Intact Financial Corporation's ("IFC") insurance subsidiaries (insurers and insurance intermediaries such as MGAs) to provide primary legal support for the development of IFC's insurance products;
  • Draft and review coverage forms, endorsements, notices and other policy documents (collectively "Products") for various business units, including commercial lines, personal lines, and most importantly, the Canadian headquarters of IFC's Global Specialty Lines, to reflect underwriting intent and IFC's risk appetite;
  • Draft and review Products to respond to regulatory, legal or business-driven changes;
  • Identify, raise and elevate coverage issues that may impact IFC, including issues that may give rise to litigation, reputational, claims or regulatory risks;
  • Monitor and identify emerging trends, relevant case law and regulatory developments that may impact IFC's Products and their wordings, and conduct legal research impacting IFC's business, including, regulatory, claims and case law developments as well as market/industry trends in the insurance sector, particularly property & casualty but also life & health;
  • Act as a legal resource in coordinating with internal stakeholders in the product development process, including Corporate Underwriting, Distribution, Claims, Translation, and Operations to ensure efficient and accurate product implementation;
  • Participate in various national strategic projects in collaboration with the Manager and Vice President of Legal Affairs, where appropriate.
Note: this position can be based out of our downtown Toronto office, downtown Montreal office, or St-John's Newfoundland office.

Qualifications
  • Member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Barreau du Quebec or the Law Society of Newfoundland & Labrador
  • 2-5 years of experience at a law firm (ideally at an insurance firm) or large in-house legal department (ideally at an insurance company), although more senior lawyers in the industry will also be considered and the role can be tailored accordingly
  • Experience in insurance coverage opinion preferred
  • Being bilingual or fluent in French is an asset
  • Being called to both the Ontario and Quebec bars or having both common law and civil law degrees is an asset
  • Ability to build relationships, and advise and support senior leadership on the intersection of legal, business, and strategic risks and goals
  • Sound judgment, the ability to assess the practical implications of legal and compliance risks, and influence decision-making at the operational and corporate level
  • Excellent drafting and communication skills
  • Confidence managing files independently with minimal support
  • Ability to proactively identify legal and reputational risks and propose innovation business solutions
  • Ability to collaborate well with others
  • Capacity to prioritize and handle several files and projects, and to work efficiently in a fast-paced, challenging work environment
