CURIE is excited to announce we are seeking a full-time lawyer to join our team on a permanent basis. The ideal candidate will have strong communication, analytical, time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills. As Legal Counsel, you will be responsible for coverage opinions, litigation, educational projects, and building strong relationships with CURIE's team and its valued subscribers. This position directly reports to the General Counsel for CURIE.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare coverage opinions involving policy and contract review and analysis
Assist in the refinement of policy wordings as and when required
Conduct research related to coverage opinions, the defence of a wide variety of claims brought against member schools, and prosecution of subrogated actions
Handle all aspects of of claims from early investigation through to trial, whilst adhering to Key Performance Indicators
Prepare pleadings, motion records, facta, mediation memoranda, pre-trial conference memoranda and trial documents
Attend court and court-related appearances, including examinations for discovery, mediations, pre-trial conferences, and trials
Maintain accurate documentation on all claims files assigned
Communicate with General Counsel, CURIE's claim examiner team and members to advise on the progress of litigation
Maintain professional and productive relationships with senior management, CURIE's claim examiner team and members
Work cooperatively with legal team
Deliver educational seminars for members on legal issues through webinars and regional conferences
Prepare articles for CURIE newsletters
Assume other responsibilities and special projects as assigned
Work closely with and provide day-to-day assistance to General Counsel as required
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD) and practicing member of the Law Society of Ontario in good standing.
Minimum 5 - 10 years of relevant experience in the areas of insurance; policy contract coverage opinions, defence litigation and subrogation files.
Requirements
Excellent knowledge of:
a) coverage in the various policy wording for multiple commercial lines of business;
b) the Insurance Act, the Occupiers' Liability Act, and other related legislation and regulations that impact the commercial lines of business;
c) insurance and legal principles and practices;
d) practices/procedures of the Superior Court of Justice; and
e) contractual liability.
Ability to examine and critically analyze contracts, policies and evidence to provide reasoned opinions and make sound recommendations.
Ability to coordinate, prepare and advocate moderately complex matters.
Ability to competently negotiate with exemplary written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support CURIE's subscribers.
Strong organizational and documentation skills.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
