Qualifications:
Essential
Experience performing a full range of legal assistant duties in a civil law environment, such as litigation, corporate commercial, real estate and family law, and performing support duties such as typing, maintaining filing systems, including research and investigative work
Effective written communication skills with experience drafting, proofreading/editing and managing correspondence such as (but not limited to) letters, memos, forms and complex legal documents, such as agreements, transfers of title, closing books, orders, affidavits and briefs
Problem-solving skills with the ability to conduct analysis and handle non-routine issues
Ability to manage confidential and politically sensitive material/situations in an appropriate manner
Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to work in a high pressure and time sensitive environment to meet conflicting deadlines
Ability to pay attention to detail and ensure accuracy of work
Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to speak in a clear and concise manner
Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with Ministers, judiciary, senior managers, other departmental staff, external agencies and the general public
Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work co-operatively and constructively as part of a team
Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word), Adobe or equivalent software
Desired
Experience searching Land Titles, Personal Property Registry, King's Bench Registry and extra-provincial court registries
Experience using Quicklaw, Westlaw, and related internet searches
Successful completion of a legal assistant training program
Duties:
The Legal Assistant is often the first point of contact for clients on many different types of matters and provides administrative support to multiple Crown Counsel. The position is responsible for ensuring files are properly prepared and relevant information is located, analyzed, and brought to the attention of Crown counsel; making inquiries and conducting appropriate searches (e.g. at Court Offices, Land Titles and Registry Offices); preparing correspondence and legal documents, entering time data for legal billing system, scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements and other duties as assigned; maintaining files and document management systems, including organizing and indexing case law, legal opinions, files, precedents and other legal resources.
