BACKGROUND:



We are the Anishinaabeg of Deshkan Ziibiing, also known as Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. We call ourselves Anishinabek, which means the original people. We are known as the Ojibway, a Nation of the Algonquin language family who originally migrated to the Great Lakes area from the north-eastern region of North America. Our political alliances are with the Odawa (Ottawa) and Bodaywadami (Pottawatomi), who form the Three Fires Confederacy. We have a modern air-conditioned school with a full-sized double-gym, outdoor track, a full cafeteria, and a new library. Class sizes are small and well stocked with current resources, a SmartBoard and ample access to current technology.

Cultural Awareness Statement:

Demonstrate knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy and learning techniques, socialization processes, attitudes, values, aspirations, and expectations of the Nation. Must have the ability to use tact and discretion to establish and maintain effective communications. An appreciation of the Anishinaabemowin language is required and the desire to learn the language.

Qualifications:



Grade 12 Secondary Diploma or equivalent with experience Post-Secondary training in Education, Special Education or in a related field preferred Specialized training or experience working with children who have special needs or exceptionalities is an asset Knowledge of the First Nations educational systems, learning techniques, socialization processes, attitudes, values, aspirations and expectations Must have the ability to work as part of a team to establish and maintain effective communication with teaching staff and student Clean Vulnerable Sector/CPIC Specialized training is considered an asset Physical capabilities to perform job duties

Language/Culture



1. Attend Anishinaabemowin staff classes as required

2. Team-teach with the Language staff when they are in your class

3. Promote Anishinaabemowin language in the classroom

4. A willingness to learn the language

5. Strongly encouraged to attend community events representing COTTFN Education ex. Pow Wow, Community Feast, etc.

6. Collaborate in assisting in the development of culturally based curriculum

Job Duties:

Under the Supervision of the Learning Support Teacher/ Principal the LSW is responsible for but not limited to:

Assisting teachers in the classroom or school environment by helping students individually or in small groups to consolidate skills in any subject area or grade Guiding and assisting students in the development of self-help skills such as eating, dressing and toileting and demonstrating flexibility by being able to work in all classrooms when needed Preparing and maintaining the indoor and outdoor play areas for children's use, including checking toys and equipment to ensure safe functioning, and performing various housekeeping and sanitizing duties as required Documenting student work performance and behaviours to share with teachers and LST Supervising and assisting with students' behaviour such as deescalating behaviour or following through with behaviour management and modification plans Assisting with supervision of an overall class when the teacher is working with a small group Model appropriate pro-social skills, participation, behaviours and problem-solving skills Assist staff in the management of students' behaviours by applying proactive strategies

Extra-curricular Activities



Each LSW will become involved in an extra-curricular activity as expected by the Principals, the Board and the community The value of extra-curricular activities in building relationships and supporting student and family engagement cannot be understated. It is requested all staff participate in extra-curricular activities monthly. This includes, but is not limited to, the supervision and running of student sporting events, clubs, parent nights, and other such events

Hours of work:



Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM (7.5-hour days)
