Established in 1976 the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Nature and Scope




The Learning Strategist supports clients and students by assessing individual learning and instructional needs to ensure an effective learning environment for SIIT students. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.



General Accountability




The Learning Strategist will offer a wide range of appropriate interventions and work closely with the Instructors and Program Coordinators to provide guidance in a variety of areas including teaching strategies and instructional skill development to effectively create an inclusive learning environment with appropriate assessment and evaluation to meet student's unique requirements.


The Learning Strategist will observe, interview and utilize other applicable resources in order to establish effective learning plans for SIIT students. Referrals for external assessments of students may be necessary. In addition, the incumbent will work in consultation with internal and external resources to enhance educational resources, accommodations and adaptations. This position provides additional support as required and includes the following broad range of accountability:





Specific Accountabilities



AssessmentSupport

Assess learning needs by observing and consulting with applicable faculty and administration to advise on the best approach and provision to support learning and development Identify learning difficulties and refer students for an external assessment where required; coupled with implementing the learning plan based on results of assessments Advocate for, and coordinate accommodations, for the assessed student Develop networks and partnerships to promote best practices in teaching and learning with accommodations

Program DevelopmentAdministration

Compile information from faculty, administration and external agencies, in order to identify difficulties to help access eligible accommodations Research, develop and apply effective interventions to promote psychological wellbeing, social, emotional and behavioral development, and to raise educational standards Design appropriate strategies and tools to facilitate positive learning that role models best practices in teaching and learning with accommodations Develop learning plan specific to learner's needs along with recommendations and actions to be taken Develop and implement, either individually or as a member of a team, an inclusive program by working collaboratively with faculty and administrative staff Research, develop and apply effective interventions to promote psychological wellbeing, social, emotional and behavioral development, and to raise educational standards Design appropriate strategies and tools to facilitate positive learning that models best practices in teaching and learning with accommodations

Reporting

Provide timely and objective reports, as required Report regularly to direct supervisor on services, projects, and partnerships being undertaken Communicate accommodation needs necessary for the institution with faculty and administration Ensure issues that have a significant impact on the reputation of the service, health, and wellbeing of students and staff are communicated to the direct supervisor in a timely manner

Required Qualifications and Experience:

A Bachelor of Education specializing in Special Education with experience in the field of adult education, intervention and counseling in numerous areas of disability. Effective communication and interpersonal skills; dedication and passion to work with individuals with special learning needs coupled with a broad knowledge of development and teaching methods. Contribute and support an environment that values the beliefs, needs and contributions of a culturally diverse community. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations would be an asset. Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation, as the role involves frequent community-based travel.


As this position is considered safety sensitive, the incumbent will be subject to testing as per SIIT's Alcohol and Substances policy.
