Our client, a Canadian multinational energy transportation company with a focus on the transportation, distribution, and generation of energy, has an immediate need for an Leak Detection Engineer. This is a contract position for one (1) year located in Edmonton, Alberta.

Description

This position is accountable for building, maintaining, quality assurance testing, and tuning leak detection Computational Pipeline Monitoring (CPM) systems, and related technologies, to achieve optimal leak detection performance in compliance with applicable regulatory, internal, and pipe line specific requirements.

The Leak Detection Engineer will act as a Subject Matter Lead for the integration of new assets into our Leak Detection program and provides direct support to the Leak Detection Assessment and Support Team with leak analysis and leak detection system support.

Scope/Dimensions:

  • This is a safety critical role where daily activities and independent decisions can directly influence ability to respond to a release or comply with existing leak detection related regulations.
  • Performs independent analysis of leak detection systems and informs Subject Matter Experts of results and findings.
  • Supporting Leak Detection Subject Matter Experts (LD SMEs) in the development and execution of implementation plans, as well as the development and update of project documentation with scope up to several hundred thousand dollars.
Specific Accountabilities:
  • Performs routine maintenance on leak detection models which includes reviews of alarms, displays, overrides, model diagnostics, and data files.
  • Monitors production leak detection systems, performs deep root-cause analysis, and implements required complex updates following Management of Change processes.
  • Responsible for the design, development, implementation, and support of complex and/or innovative CPM based leak detection systems, including building, testing, tuning, and installation of production systems for existing and new pipeline assets.
  • Reviews and regularly updates all leak detection model documentation to ensure latest standards and review cycles are followed.
  • Develops, updates, and executes rollout plans.
  • Creates/updates procedures and training materials.
  • Provides forecasts for work tasks, and provides progress updates.
  • Develops and executes applicable procedures, best practices, and guidance documents.
  • Evaluates leak detection systems and develops prioritized recommendations to PCSLD Management for additional instrumentation to achieve improved leak detectability with appropriate justification; and assists with submissions into capital budget cycles and long range planning program.
  • Participates in the execution and reporting of leak detection sensitivity measurements.
  • Performs data path commissioning.
  • Responds to information requests from internal and external stakeholders related to Operations, Compliance, and Projects, and reviews responses with the Manager and/or Director of Leak Detection.
  • Documents and communicates results and issues impacting the Projects to the LD SMEs, Supervisors and Manager in Leak Detection.
  • On occasion, communicates directly with Control Center Operations to determine solutions to complex operational issues that impact the functionality of leak detection systems.
  • Actively participates in the safety culture.
Qualifications:
  • A Professional Engineer, or an equivalent Systems Analyst
  • 7+ years of hydraulic and computer programming experience, that includes at least 2 years directly related to computational pipeline modeling.
  • Knowledge in pipeline hydraulics.
  • Previous experience using real-time transient model software and/or statistical modeling software.
  • Experience working with and analyzing large data sets.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
  • Effective communication, facilitation, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred:
  • Experience with Synergi Pipeline Simulator, ATMOS, EmersonPLM
  • Knowledge of Control Centre operations and SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint, JIRA, and PI.
