Lead Process / Project Engineer

Burnaby, BC, CA, Canada

Job Description

AGEIAS is a process R&D and engineering company focused on the scale up of chemical processes from lab to pilot scale. Our multi-disciplinary team supports clients through process development work, including laboratory studies and proof of concept test stand operations, and through process engineering design of pilot and demonstration plants.

We are seeking a Lead Process / Project Engineer who will be responsible for developing and operating pilot plants and process test stands in support of process scale up activities. This includes overseeing process design, safety reviews, procurement, installation, commissioning, and operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable switching between leadership, technical calculations, and field work.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Design

Lead the engineering design of pilot plant and process test stand systems and the development of all supporting documentation, such as design drawings (e.g., PFDs, P&IDs), equipment and component specifications, control narratives, and datasheets. Define design bases, operating envelopes, and commissioning plans for pilot systems. Perform and/or review overpressure protection studies and pressure relief sizing in accordance with API and relevant jurisdictional codes. Review and approve engineering documentation prepared by team members. Lead and participate in hazard workshops when necessary (e.g., HAZOP, What-If). Assist with scale-up cost estimation and process development.

Project Execution & Commissioning

Plan and execute the installation, commissioning, and start-up of pilot systems. Manage other parties when necessary (e.g., vendors, fabricators, trades).

Team & Stakeholder Management

Supervise and mentor a team of junior process engineers. Allocate tasks, review deliverables, and ensure adherence to project schedules and budgets. Interface with clients regularly.

Operational Support

Provide engineering support during operating campaigns, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and implementing improvements. Operate and monitor process systems (e.g., reactors, pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, RO systems, distillation columns, etc.). Lead the development of operating manuals and emergency procedures. Promote a strong safety culture.

Required Qualifications:

Eligible to work in Canada. Bachelor's degree in Chemical, or Process Engineering (P.Eng. designation required). 7+ years of relevant experience in process engineering, pilot plant, or industrial plant environments. Experience with experimental setups, instrumentation, and lab or pilot plant operations, as well as commissioning, start-up, and operation of pilot or industrial systems. Experience designing system relief philosophies (e.g., pressure safety valves, rupture discs, vent systems). Good understanding of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. Proficiency with engineering documentation (PFDs, P&IDs, C&E matrices, Engineering Lists, datasheets). Excellent communication skills, with the ability to mentor junior staff and coordinate cross-functional teams. Strong safety mindset and familiarity with hazard analysis techniques (HAZOP, What-If, etc.).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

Familiarity with hazardous area classification (e.g., API 505). Knowledge of best commissioning practices (e.g., ASME B31.3). Prior work in process research and development environments. Understanding of required work activities across engineering disciplines for plant design.

Working Conditions

Primarily on-site, with regular field presence during installation and commissioning phases. Involves physical work such as climbing platforms, inspecting piping systems, and witnessing pressure tests. May require occasional travel to fabrication shops, client sites, or partner facilities.
