JOB OVERVIEW



Reporting to the Manager, Damage Prevention, the

Lead Locator

is responsible for completing buried facility locates including electrical, water, sewer, steam, gas, telephone, and other communications infrastructure while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strict adherence to company and client safety standards.


This role also serves in a

supervisory and technical leadership capacity

, providing oversight, guidance, and mentorship to Utility Locators. The Lead Locator supports daily operations through workload coordination, equipment and vehicle management, technical troubleshooting, and on-the-job training, while ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and productivity in the field.

$35.00 - $40.00

SCHEDULE



Day shift Monday to Saturday 12-hour days

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:



Supervise and oversee the work of Utility Locators in the field Provide training, guidance, mentoring, and technical support to junior team members Support operations with scheduling, workload balancing, vehicle allocation, and locating equipment Act as a technical subject-matter expert and troubleshoot complex locating issues in the field Interpret and analyze site plans, area maps, as-built drawings, alignment sheets, and blueprints to accurately determine underground utility locations Utilize maps, blueprints, databases, and locating equipment to identify underground facilities and ensure records are accurately updated based on field findings Mark and document buried utility locations using EM/RF locating equipment to ensure precise utility detection Produce clear, accurate sketches, measurements, and detailed field notes Create detailed maps of located work areas using

TurboCAD software

, and clearly report and explain findings to clients and management as required Participate in all required safety meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities Operate company vehicles safely and in compliance with company policies Maintain, clean, and properly store locating equipment to ensure optimal working condition Strictly follow all health and safety protocols, including completing daily safety reports and documentation


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE



Minimum

10 years of experience

in underground line/facility locating Minimum

3 years of experience

supervising or overseeing locate workers in the field Experience coordinating locate activities with contractors on large or complex projects Demonstrated experience training and mentoring junior locators

UALL, TALL, PALL, and/or Locating 101 certifications

considered an asset Valid

Class 5 Driver's Licence

with a clean 5-year abstract Strong ability to read and interpret maps, as-built drawings, and alignment sheets Proficient in operating a wide range of underground locating equipment (EM/RF locators)

Ground Disturbance Level 2 Training

Safety certifications including

CSTS, OSSA/BSO, First Aid, and H2S Alive

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills High level of computer proficiency, including mapping and documentation tools Ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced field environment Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy, quality, and safety Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or challenging situations Strong work ethic, reliability, and accountability Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also supporting team success Proven ability to learn, take direction, and accept coaching and feedback Candidates must be

eligible to permanently work in Canada

, or presently have the required approvals to work permanently in Canada.
