The Role
The Lead Hand, New Construction supports the Construction Manager in the construction and completion of new homes. Both hands-on construction work and leadership of volunteer groups are integral parts of this role. They oversee daily on-site operations, ensure safety protocols are followed, and support in meeting quality and timeline objectives. They also provide leadership and mentorship to volunteer teams, fostering a positive and productive team environment. The Lead Hand, New Construction also performs home maintenance in conjunction with the Construction Manager.

Key Responsibilities
As the successful candidate, you will:
Work with Construction Manager to run an efficient, safe, and productive build site.
Support Construction Manager in the hosting and training of volunteers.
Lead, motivate, and guide volunteers to ensure safe and efficient work practices.
Monitor work to ensure it meets project specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.
Communicate effectively with team members, volunteers, project managers, and community partners.
Assist in troubleshooting and resolving on-site issues.
Ensure site and equipment inspections are completed and documented. Notify all volunteers and workers of potential hazards prior to starting work.
Support the Site Liaison with the coordination of each build day including breaks, lunches, and questions pertaining to Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa.
Monitor and enforce Health and Safety policies, programs, and laws to ensure continued safety of all parties on-site.
Lead volunteer groups during corporate build days.
Monitor and maintain tools and equipment.
Reports daily to Construction Manager of any workplace safety issues or incidents.
Assist with material management through coordinating pick-ups and deliveries.
Maintain a hands-on role on the build site.
Contribute to a safe working environment for all staff and volunteers.
Act as a temporary Site Supervisor during the absence of the Construction Manager.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Minimum 4 years construction experience.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Excellent problem-solving skills and adaptability.
Willingness to learn and develop personal and professional skills.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
Knowledge of construction methods, safety standards, and building codes.
Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in multiple trades' functions such as carpentry, drywall, painting etc. is a requirement, as is a knowledge of various tools and equipment.
Ability to perform construction related tasks in residential homes including but not limited to framing, siding, window and door installation, drywall patching, painting, tile/grout, trim repairs, caulking, etc.
Physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Computer skills - Word, Excel, Outlook.
Ability to lead a team of volunteers.
Valid driver's license,?access to a vehicle,?and willingness to travel.
Working Conditions
The successful candidate is expected to work/live in Ottawa and/or the surrounding area.
Due to the nature of this role, the incumbent must be available to work onsite daily on the build site. Due to the nature of the organization, it can be expected at times to travel to the office and ReStores.
The salary band for this role is between $55,000.00 and $65,000.00 per annum based on experience. Habitat Greater Ottawa also offers a comprehensive health benefits plan, vacation and flexible personal days.
