Your Opportunity:
We're excited to offer a leadership opportunity within our Facilities Maintenance & Engineering (FME) team at the University of Alberta Hospital. We are seeking a 1yr Temporary full time Mechanical Team Lead Hand to guide a team of five plumber/steamfitters, five plumbers, and one Maintenance 2 technician in supporting critical hospital infrastructure. This position is key to the safe, efficient operation of major building systems that support patient care and clinical services. Systems under your leadership will include high-pressure steam, compressed air, medical gases, dialysis water, lab and specialty water systems, domestic water, and fire protection/sprinkler systems. As the Lead Hand, you will: Mentor and coach new staff while supporting growth in experienced team members. Promote inclusive team building and cross-training within the group and across trades. Support troubleshooting and execution of infrastructure repairs and projects. Advise management on infrastructure replacement and upgrade planning. Description:
As a Lead Hand, you will be responsible for providing functional supervision to a moderately sized group of similar journeyperson trade staff. In addition to functional supervision, you will perform a wide variety of journeyperson level trade duties associated with maintaining, renovating, repairing and construction in accordance with AHS standards and practices. You will assign work of journeyperson and supervise staff and perform ongoing maintenance work in an area of assigned trade or related responsibility. In addition, you will provide health and safety training and orientation and ensure compliance.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Certificate in trades from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Additional Required Qualifications:

The Lead Hand must be a Journeyman tradesperson certified to perform work in an applicable trade, who possesses strong leadership abilities in addition to technical knowledge. Interprovincial Journeyman Certificate in related discipline is required. Supervision experience required. Must be reliable, cooperative, and capable of working independently. Must be physically capable to carry out the duties of this position (i.e. walk for long periods of time, climb ladders, lift and move heavy material or equipment and respond quickly to building emergencies). Must have critical thinking skills and be able to diffuse and control problematic situations in a moment's notice. Must be able to work in a hospital environment and work around traumatic events that occur in a hospital setting. Must have minimum 3 years working experience in a health care environment and overall knowledge of hospital organization and operations. Must have proven leadership experience in a healthcare care environment. Working knowledge of computer applications such as computerized maintenance management systems and a basic understanding of computer programs such as Word, Excel, Access and e-mail are required. Must be familiar with writing and reading blueprints and schematics. Full working knowledge of applicable building systems, hospital standards and codes, hospital non-medical equipment, and specialized areas. Must be able to maintain composure and make decisions in emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of commercial/institutional construction methods and of construction management and contract administration. Experience with project scope creation and process would be an asset. Past/present proven experience with process driven and complex problem-solving tasks. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
