We are currently hiring Lead Ground Control Engineer to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, ON.



Compass Minerals' Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada's Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.




How will you contribute to the team?





This position functions with a high degree of autonomy and reports directly to the Engineering and Capital Manager. The Lead Ground Control Engineering will coordinate and supervise a small group of technical professionals responsible for the design, maintenance, monitoring and rehabilitation of excavations in an underground salt mine. This position will also be responsible for project management of continuous improvement projects as well as geologic exploration activities.


Lead a team of rock mechanics and geological engineers and technicians to help develop and execute mine plans, programs, and strategies in the underground operation. Manages capital projects and associated contractors as Support the Engineering and Capital Manager in plans and work including but not limited to; drilling, seismic, and geologic modeling. Responsible for the management of underground exploration programs (diamond drilling, GPR, seismic) Support the Engineering and Capital Manager in accurate mineral reserve estimates based off of annual exploration Support the Engineering and Capital Manager in subsidence monitoring, data collection, and modeling Support the Engineering and Capital Manager in rock mechanics instrumentation monitoring, ground condition audits and inspections, and underground blasting and rehabilitation plans. Manage the execution of the ground control inspection and monitoring program through supervision of Ground Control Technicians and Auditors. Work with other technical disciplines and departments to effectively design and execute the backlog of engineering Work with other technical disciplines to help develop effective strategic plans, mine plans, and project Keep aware of industry developments and best practices to pursue continuous improvement projects related to mining and ground control designs and activities. Maintain/augment network of ground control and rock mechanics Supports KPI development, measurement, communication, and continuous improvement utilizing Compass continuous improvement tools. Communicate effectively and transparently with all other departments to maintain role Perform other related duties as



What should you bring to the role?



Requires a bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent At least 10 years' experience in Mining Engineering with a specialty in Rock Mechanics, Geology and Ground Demonstrate excellent computer, communication and writing Demonstrate proficiency in key mining system software programs such as Software experience with Deswik, Leica Geosystems, AutoCAD, VnetPC, Underground mining experience Soft Rock mining experience would be considered a strong Experience in managing both a salary and hourly workforce a Experience working with a union workforce a

What is the work schedule?




This is a Monday-Friday position. Overtime may be required in order to support a 24/7 operation. This position is expected to work underground. If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate. A relocation assistance package is available to those that qualify.

$120,000 - $150,000 per year (based on experience, skills, qualifications).
