You will:
Apply deep engineering expertise to support workplace safety investigations, analyze incidents, and provide expert reports that help enforce Ontario's health and safety laws.
Advise on and shape safety standards by contributing technical insight to legislation, codes, and best practices that protect workers across sectors.
Lead complex engineering projects that support the province's occupational health and safety goals, from research and audits to developing new safety initiatives.
Represent Ontario as a technical authority in court, inquests, and national committees, offering expert testimony and guidance on engineering and safety matters.
Mentor and support colleagues by sharing knowledge, reviewing technical work, and helping build capacity across the ministry's inspection and engineering teams.
Note:
The position requires the ability to work occasionally after hours.
The position requires the ability to travel to workplaces located in your primary assigned geographical area, with the occasional assignment to workplaces outside of your area.

Mandatory requirements
You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class "G" driver's license or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof of a valid driver's license at time of hire.

Technical Expertise in Mechanical Engineering
Demonstrated knowledge and application of mechanical engineering principles, including forensic analysis, risk assessment, and compliance with OH&S legislation.
Knowledge of standards, guidelines, codes, other criteria, and sound engineering practice related to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Ability to conduct complex inspections, investigations, and audits across sectors (e.g., industrial, mining, construction) and provide authoritative engineering reports and expert testimony.
Experience with relevant computer software to produce engineering reports, complete calculations and drawings, perform analysis and draft a variety of materials.

Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Regulatory Knowledge and Application
o Understanding of the OH&S Act, regulations, standards, and codes, and their application in diverse workplace settings. o Ability to develop, interpret, and enforce compliance standards, and provide strategic advice on engineering deficiencies and public safety risks.

Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
Proven ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences, including legal counsel, senior management, and external stakeholders
Ability to represent the ministry as an expert witness, on national committees, and in public forums, with strong advocacy and negotiation skills.

Project and Quality Assurance Leadership
Experience leading large-scale engineering projects, including planning, budgeting, and overseeing technical work aligned with ministry mandates.
Ability to assess and ensure quality and compliance of engineering work by external consultants through audits and certifications.

Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving
Demonstrated conceptual reasoning and investigative skills to identify root causes of incidents, assess engineering risks, and recommend defensible solutions.
Ability to conduct strategic research, monitor trends, and contribute to the development of new or revised standards and policies.
