Course Description:
This course examines legal issues relating to nonhuman animals. We will first explore the philosophical, scientific, and legal foundations of the field of animal law. The focus of the course will be the study of the main federal, provincial, and municipal laws, regulations and standards governing nonhuman animals (broken down according to their various "categories": domestic, companion or farmed animals, wildlife animals and animals used in scientific research). Throughout the course, a strong emphasis will be put on critically examining how the law currently understands and engages with nonhuman animals. As such, students\xe2\x80\x99 active participation is required via in class discussions and shared reflections. Upon completion of the course, students should:
Be familiar with the main theories and concepts existing in the field of animal law, such as welfarism, abolitionism and speciesism;
Know and understand the legal rules and frameworks governing nonhuman animals and be able to apply them to solve legal problems;
Develop a better appreciation of animal sentience and how animals are used and treated in our societies;
Demonstrate critical thinking on the possibilities and limits of animal law as a mean to end animal exploitation.
Students are advised that challenging, sensitive and controversial subjects will be addressed and/or debated during the course; respect and openness are required. As difficult as it is to acknowledge and discuss, it is essential for our modern societies to develop the knowledge and skills to engage with them.
TQR: At a minimum, a first degree in law. Several years of significant practice or professional experience, in the relevant area; Experience in teaching undergraduate law students in a bilingual setting.
