Reporting to the Director of Land Stewardship, the Land Referrals Officer is responsible for managing and overseeing land referrals within the McLeod Lake Indian Band's traditional territory. This role ensures that land use decisions made by external stakeholders align with the Band's cultural, environmental, and economic values. The Land Referrals Officer will work closely with government agencies, industry representatives, and community members to review land use referrals, conduct site assessments, and ensure that all land-related activities respect traditional knowledge and practices.
Key Responsibilities
Referral Management
Review and assess land use referrals for alignment with Band policies and values.
Determine and coordinate site visits when required.
Maintain accurate records of referral activities.
Site Assessment & Environmental Protection
Coordinate and conduct site assessments.
Engage Elders and community members to identify impacts on traditional land use and cultural sites.
Ensure safety and logistics for fieldwork (trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles).
Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain relationships with government and industry partners.
Represent the Band at meetings and conferences, advocating for MLIB's interests.
Collaborate with neighboring First Nations and municipalities.
Reporting & Compliance
Provide timely responses to referrals and prepare monthly reports.
Ensure compliance with environmental, historical, and cultural preservation standards.
Administrative & Operational Support
Maintain Land Referral Office vehicles and equipment.
Act as point of contact for land referral requests as required.
Identify opportunities for economic development from industrial activity on MLIB lands.
Qualifications
Required
Respect for and knowledge of Tse'Khene people, culture, and language.
Knowledge of MLIB's Traditional Territory, culture, and environmental concerns.
Minimum Grade 12 education.
Proficiency in environmental regulations and land management practices.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe PDF, and Google Earth Pro.
Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License with a clean record.
Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
Preferred
Training or certification in environmental science, natural resources, or land management.
Previous experience in land management or similar roles, preferably within an Indigenous context.
Working Conditions
Combination of office and fieldwork in varying weather conditions.
Occasional lifting (up to 50 lbs).
Travel required for site visits, meetings, and conferences.
Some evening and weekend work as required.
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly wage:
$25.79 - $30.95
, based on experience and MLIB Salary Bands.
