Reporting to the Senior Manager, Land Strategy and Planning, the Land Negotiator is responsible for managing ATCO Next Energy\'s mineral portfolio. The successful candidate will optimize value across existing holdings, facilitate growth projects and partnerships, and assimilate acquisitions. Moreover, they will identify revenue growth opportunities and provide support to the Land, Commercial, and Business Development teams.

What You Get to Do:

  • Maintain overall accountability for ATCO Next Energy\'s land base and mineral land obligations.
  • Provide strategic recommendations on land holdings, monitor competitor activity, and identify beneficial business opportunities.
  • Identify, analyze, and manage acquisition opportunities.
  • Monitor mineral expiries proactively and optimize land holdings prior to expiry.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, lease renewals, cancellations, and reclamation responsibilities.
  • Coordinate all aspects of mineral rights acquisition and disposition, including land package preparation and third-party land agency management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, commercial operations, and Business Development.
  • Negotiate contracts and prepare agreements.
  • Review existing files and agreements to determine ATCO Next Energy\'s obligations and provide recommendations on option lease agreements (surface and mineral).
  • Optimize and monetize core and non-core assets.
  • Oversee all land and mineral agreement billing/invoicing and liaise directly with the accounting department.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager, Land Strategy and Planning, to establish annual budgets and provide recommendations on ATCO Next Energy\'s land base.
  • Manage land and mineral portfolio & administer a strategic lease portfolio.
  • Identify, engage with BD/Commercial teams, and pursue additional service offerings associated with existing assets.
  • Resolve complex land rights issues.
  • Interpret company land rights, policies, and procedures when responding to internal and external requests.
  • Serve as a source of competitive insight and market intelligence around existing assets.
  • Evaluate and identify third-party land uses that impact or create opportunities for ATCO business and communicate with the broader team.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with third parties, landowners, partners, regulators, and industry groups.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify and implement commercial land agreements to support business opportunities.
  • Ensure all contracts, mineral, and surface leases are accurately recorded and documented in the land database system, CS Land.
Who You Are:
  • 7-10 years of proven experience in land negotiation, preferably within the energy sector, renewables, and clean energy.
  • A degree or diploma in Land, Business, Law, Geography, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • A 2-year Land Agent diploma or Land Agent certificate from a recognized college or institute would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience in contract management and land/mineral rights acquisition. (surface land knowledge is considered an asset)
  • Experience in identifying and analyzing acquisition opportunities.
  • Familiarity with AER (Alberta Energy Regulator) and AUC (Alberta Utilities Commission) regulations and tenure legislation.
  • Proficiency in land database systems like CS Land or equivalent software.
