Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The Laboratory Technician will be working with the Principal Investigator and graduate students in the design, implementation and analysis of diabetes-related research projects. A major activity of this position will involve tissue culture of human primary cells. This individual will also be independently conducting research projects involving the use of specialized equipment.
Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the day-to-day logistical operation and maintenance of the lab
  • Conduct research projects involving human cell culture in collaboration with the Principal Investigator
  • Plan and develop of experimental protocols in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and graduate/summer students, postdoc trainees and technical staff
  • Contribute to the translation of cell production methods to GMP production including selection of appropriate production equipment, raw material selection, assay development, and protocol/batch record development
  • Implement production and manufacturing procedures in the cleanrooms and assist with process improvement project and ensuring regulatory requirements
  • Data collection including analyzing tissue samples for insulin, DNA, glucagon and cytokine content using fluorometric, ELISA and colorimetric assays
  • Collection, manipulation and interpretation of experimental data to determine relevant significance and eventual publication
  • Train other staff/students in technologies developed in the laboratory, including training visiting investigators and students
Qualifications:
  • Experience in cell and islet biology, physiology, immunology, molecular biology and transplantation.
  • 1-2 years of experience involving histological assessment of tissues and cells, islet isolation, primary cell culture, molecular biology, microscopy, and ELISA.
  • Bachelor's degree or post-secondary diploma in a bioscience-related field
  • 1-2 years of previous research experience in a laboratory setting
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office applications, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop, lmageJ (NIH), PerkinElmer Assay on Demand, Applied Biosystems Step One Plus Quantitative RT-PCR design and analysis software, Primer One, National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) gene analysis tools
  • Experience with the University of Alberta's administration, policies and procedures.
  • Experience with the University of Alberta's laboratory health and safety regulations.
  • Experience with the University of Alberta's online portals, such as ARISE, CHEMATIX and HSLAS.
  • Strong verbal and written science communication skills for effective manuscript writing, abstract writing and presenting to research groups.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Strong analytical skills, organization skills and time management skills.
