Laboratory Manager

Job Description

We are seeking a highly organized and experienced Lab Manager to oversee operations in our multidisciplinary analytical laboratory. Our lab specializes in the analysis of asbestos, mould, radon, unknown materials characterization, and particle size distribution. This role is critical to maintaining the high standards of analytical quality and operational continuity that our clients rely on.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervise and support a team of skilled analysts, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. Ensure smooth day-to-day lab operations, including workflow management, equipment maintenance, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Maintain or exceed existing analytical quality benchmarks through rigorous QA/QC protocols and continuous improvement initiatives. Work closely with the Business Development Manager and Director to identify opportunities for expanding service offerings and enhancing client value. Monitor staff productivity and implement strategies to optimize efficiency and throughput. Oversee accurate documentation of lab activities, results, and compliance records.
Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials Science, or a related field. Minimum 10 years of experience in a laboratory setting, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role. Proven leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Experience with ISO/IEC 17025 or similar quality standards is an asset. Working knowledge of Microsoft Access/SQL Database management.
Core Technical Skills

Laboratory Methods & Instrumentation



Strong understanding of optics, microscopy techniques, sample preparation, calibration, image analysis, maintenance, and environmental organism identification. Ability to troubleshoot instruments and oversee maintenance schedules. Knowledge of sample preparation, chain of custody, and method detection limits.

Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance



Deep familiarity with standards such as: ISO/IEC 1702, NELAC/NELAP, EPA and local regulatory methods Ability to implement QA/QC programs, internal audits, corrective actions, and SOP development.

Data Integrity & Documentation



Understanding of data traceability, validation, LIMS usage, and record-keeping.
Leadership and Management Skills

Team Leadership & Communication



Supervising & mentoring analysts and technicians. Training staff on methods, safety, and quality procedures. Clear communication with clients, and management.

Workflow Planning & Resource Management



Scheduling personnel, instrument time, and sample loads. Managing budgets, consumables, and purchasing.

Problem-Solving & Decision-Making



Ability to respond quickly to analytical issues, quality problems, and client needs.
Technical/Digital Skills

Programming / "Programmer Mindset"



Basic scripting/programming (Python, VBA, SQL) for automating
o Data processing

o QC checks

o Report generation

Understanding of automation concepts:
o Workflow optimization

o Error reduction

o Data pipelines

AI Familiarity - understanding of how AI can be utilized as a tool to enhance productivity or quality

LIMS & Digital Tools



Expertise in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) customization. Familiarity with databases and data visualization tools (Microsoft Power BI). Ability to implement digital workflows and reduce manual processes.
Soft Skills

Critical Thinking & Analytical Reasoning



Ability to interpret complex datasets and validate scientific results.

Adaptability & Continuous Improvement



Keeping up with new environmental regulations, analytical techniques, and technologies. Lean / Six Sigma skills for process optimization (valuable but optional).
