Job Description


Laboratory engineer To support its product development activities, Sonus Microsystems, Inc. is seeking for highly motivated, interdisciplinary laboratory engineer with excellent hands-on experience. She/He will be part of the product development team and will play an important role in product development, prototyping, design, testing and the implementation of manufacturing. Some of the main activities will involve amongst others the development, optimization, and manufacturing of novel polymer-based ultrasound transducers. Most of the activities will be conducted in the Microsystems and Nanotechnology (MiNa) laboratory at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Sonus Microsystems Inc. is the creator of polymer-based Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasound Transducers (polyCMUTs), which have unique characteristics that enables the use of ultrasound in applications not previous possible with piezoelectric or silicon-based ultrasound transducers. Sonus\xe2\x80\x99 ultrasound technology has applications in multiple markets, including healthcare, non-destructive testing (NDT) and consumer electronics products. Responsibilities:

  • Support diverse aspects related to the product development of various Micro-Electromechanical (MEMS)-based ultrasound transducers.
  • Basic microfabrication activities, including:
  • Silicon wafer preparation
  • Metal evaporation
  • Wire bonding
  • Electromechanical characterization activities, including:
  • Electrical tests using impedance analyzers and vector network analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Vibration characterization using laser doppler vibrometer.
  • Acoustic characterization activities, including:
  • Operation of an automatic stage for acoustic measurements
  • Acoustic measurements using hydrophones in a water tank
  • Programing macros for the automatic acquisition of signals
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all processes performed.
  • Documentation of experiments and presentation of findings
  • Creation of SOPs
  • Interact regularly with materials and services suppliers
  • Collaborate with a highly multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists
Qualifications:
  • Required degree: Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s, Master\xe2\x80\x99s or PhD degree in a field of Science or Engineering
  • Experience with electrical measurement equipment (impedance analyzers, vector network analyzer, etc)
  • Basic knowledge on programing languages and script creation
  • Excellent organizational as well as English verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and apply new skills, procedures, and approaches.
  • Experience and qualifications below are an asset only, training will be provided if needed:
  • Knowledge in Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasound Transducers (CMUT)
  • Experience in cleanroom microfabrication
  • Acoustical characterization using hydrophones and water tanks
  • Operation of prototyping tools (CNC, 3D printing, laser cutter, etc.)
  • FEM simulation of MEMS devices (ANSYS, Comsol)
  • PCB design
Since this position will be funded by the National Research Council (NRC), it has some mandatory restrictions:
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or person granted refugee status in Canada
  • a post-secondary graduate (Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s, Master\xe2\x80\x99s or PhD)
  • 15 to 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
  • a first-time participant in a Youth Employment and Skills Strategy work experience program targeted at post-secondary graduates
