Position SummaryThe Laboratory Demonstrator MLA (Medical Laboratory Assistant) is responsible for the set-up, maintenance, and demonstration of equipment for experiential learning activities and managing supply and inventory. This role supervises and directs students in the lab and collaborates with the Department to promote effective performance of MLA tasks within a safe learning environment. This position assists the Department with developing Standard Operating Procedures for faculty and student lab activities
Duties & Responsibilities * Prepares and facilitates laboratory demonstrations including set-up, usage, and clean-up ofequipment, maintains lab schedule, receives and returns lab equipment and supplies. * Directs, monitors, and supervises students during lab activities to ensure the correct and safe application of techniques for drawing blood, performing electrocardiograms (ECG), and processing specimens for analysis according to standard operating procedures; updates instructors on student progress and invigilates exams.

  • Prepares instructional support materials for laboratory and class activities.
  • Maintains demographic database for learning activities.
  • Collaborates with faculty to ensure proper sequencing and scheduling of lab activities to align with program curriculum.
  • Maintains inventory management system and ensures adequate inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Oversees and schedules the maintenance and repair of lab equipment.
  • Ensures premises and equipment are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion. Monitors collection of hazardous waste products.
  • Ensures laboratory safety protocols are in place and followed.
  • Ensures all chemicals and materials are properly labelled in accordance with WCB and WHIMIS legislation.
  • Provides input into the replacement or purchase of capital equipment.
  • Assists the Department with developing Standard Operating Procedures for faculty and student lab activities.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
QualificationsEducation and Experience
  • Completion of Grade 12 plus a Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate program, and over 2 years\' related experience or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience may be substituted for the required qualifications.
  • Maintains certification and active membership with the British Columbia Society of Laboratory Science (BCSLS).
Skills and Abilities
  • Proven interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with students, faculty, work associates and the general public.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to relay information/instruction clearly and concisely.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage
several time-sensitive tasks at any given time. * Demonstrated knowledge of MLA competencies and experience working with students in an educational setting.
  • Ability to supervise student activities and promote a positive and respectful environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate use and maintenance of all equipment.
  • Ability to organize supplies and equipment for laboratory sessions, prepare and assist instructors with demonstrations and supervise and delegate student activities.
  • Current knowledge of infection control procedures.
  • Working knowledge of inventory management, stock control and purchasing.
  • Pro-active problem-solving approach.
  • Computer experience with proficiency in MS Office and email.
