EIPS is recruiting a Laboratory Assistant at Ardrossan Junior Senior High (AJS).




The mission of Ardrossan Junior Senior High is to achieve educational excellence in preparing students for their future. As a combined junior-senior high school, staff and administration get to know students very well during their years at Ardrossan. There's a strong sense of "family" at the school. Ardrossan Junior Senior High is a dual-track school offering both an English program and a French Immersion program.


Ardrossan Junior Senior High serves approximately 770 students in grades 7 to 12, with 35 teaching staff and 12 support staff. The school is located in Ardrossan, AB, approximately 10 minutes east of Sherwood Park, AB.

JOB SUMMARY




Reporting to the Principal, the Laboratory (Lab) Assistant coordinates the daily operations of school labs and assists teachers in creating a welcoming, safe, organized, and efficient learning environment that supports student success. The position prepares and maintains laboratory equipment and manages materials and supplies to ensure lab experiments and related activities can be safely and efficiently performed. The Assistant assists with instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and in the lab as directed and supervised by teachers. Specific position responsibilities may vary within the key areas listed below and will be determined by school needs and resources.







KEY RESPONSIBILITIES




Laboratory Coordination



Work with the teacher to Oversee the technical laboratory program for staff and students, managing all equipment and technology within the Science Department while developing and enforcing laboratory procedures to support curriculum learning. Maintain a master schedule for shared facilities, equipment, and supplies, ensuring efficient use of resources and resolving scheduling conflicts for equipment usage. Provide training for new staff in school-specific laboratory procedures to ensure staff and student safety and compliance with applicable legislation and administrative procedures.

Laboratory Preparation and Supervision



Utilize technical expertise to prepare solutions for biological and chemistry applications while organizing supplies for laboratory use. Clean, dismantle, and restore laboratory materials after experiments are completed. Collaborate with the teacher to assess the technical effectiveness of laboratory operations and recommend necessary improvements. Demonstrate technical skills and provide training to staff and students on various scientific equipment, such as pH meters, microscopes, and scientific probes, while assisting with student supervision in the lab as needed. Supervise students and groups during experiments and related activities as directed by the teacher.

Equipment and Supplies Management



Oversee all equipment repairs and coordinate annual maintenance schedules while performing preventative maintenance across all areas. Develop and maintain an accurate inventory of chemicals, equipment, and materials in the science areas, ensuring adequate stock of consumables. Organize and manage the storage and disposal of chemicals and waste safely. Communicate with multiple suppliers to gather equipment specifications, pricing, and coordinate purchasing as per administrative procedures. Track and record expenditures, submit invoices and receipts, and manage financial activities within the assigned departmental budget, including the calibration of scientific equipment such as balances, probes, and pH meters.

Safe Working and Learning Environment



Ensure the safety and well-being of students and others working in the science areas and report incidents to teaching staff and other staff in accordance with administrative procedures. Maintain an up-to-date database of internal Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Uphold safe handling practices for biologically and chemically hazardous materials in accordance with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) standards and administrative procedures. Train staff on school-specific science safety procedures, and maintain safety equipment within the Science Department, including spill kits, eye wash stations, safety showers, and first aid kits. Administer basic first aid as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS



Education




Laboratory Technician Diploma or equivalent related program.


Experience




Minimum Required: 1-year related experience.


Preferred: Experience working with students.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Knowledge of laboratory environments and experience conducting experiments. Strong attention to detail and safety consciousness. Ability to successfully take direction and work in a multi-disciplinary team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision. Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to deal with the emotional and mental stress of working with groups of children in a safety sensitive environment. Collaboration, organizational, and time management skills. Flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity, and imagination. Good knowledge of computers, applicable and emerging technology, and software.
