About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular part-time Laboratory Assistant - Stem Cell to join our dynamic Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team.

In this role you will be responsible for para-technical functions of the Laboratory and may be assigned any of the duties and responsibilities listed below. Depending on the size of the Centre, complete rotation of duties may not be practical. You will adhere to all current operating procedure, practices good judgment in the performance of job responsibilities and promote Centre objectives through good interpersonal skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Prepares, processes and/or modifies all cord blood products and has the responsibility for maintaining proper storage of cord blood units.
  • Prepares cord blood shipments for distribution.
  • Receives orders for research cord blood products, selects and distributes to researchers as per Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Performs entry into SCNSS (stem cell national systems solution) IT system.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in the laboratory by performing para-technical activities, under the close supervision of a technologist or supervisor (e.g., shipping cord and maternal cord samples, and entering results into SCNSS System).
Education:
  • Grade 12 and one year laboratory work experience or an equivalent combination. BSc or College Diploma would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in food processing, pharmaceutical or biologics manufacturing is a strong asset.
  • Relevant computer skills may be required.
  • Ability to learn required technical skills.
  • Must have good oral and written communications skills.
  • Must be available to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
