Special Chemistry is a fast-paced area where multi-tasking is critical. You will receive, organize and distribute specimens for laboratory testing and investigation. You are responsible for minor equipment maintenance, preparing specimens for storage or for transport to other facilities and filing, retrieving and disposing of clinical samples. The incumbent may contact nursing stations, physicians, clinics and other hospitals and health care facilities regarding specimens. Other duties include pipette calibration verification, document storage and retrieval, and inventory control.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Successful demonstration of laboratory skills and data entry. Ability to safely and appropriately handle chemicals and solvents, some lifting (ex. reagent waste containers, document storage boxes). Experience in inventory control, equipment maintenance and specimen handling. Recent experience in Epic. Working within a team environment, good interpersonal skills, effective time management and the ability to set priorities. Must be able to represent Laboratory Medicine in a respectful, professional and courteous manner. Adaptable and flexible within an environment of change and interruptions. Must have the ability to listen, comprehend and orally respond to or relay information, directions or questions in person, over the phone, or in writing in an accurate, clear and concise manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a Chemistry Laboratory is strongly preferred. Experience in a Clinical Laboratory environment and knowledge of the Epic Beaker laboratory information system. Experience with document storage and retrieval, pipette calibration verification, minor equipment maintenance and inventory control.
