Your Opportunity:

The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions to provide support by receiving, accessioning, distributing patient specimens to the testing areas or referral bench at the University of Alberta Hospital. Duties are primarily sorting and matching specimens to requisition and packing lists, accessioning requisitions into a laboratory information system for specimens referred in, receiving referred in specimens for testing, specimen distribution, and send outs. Additional duties may include phlebotomy, and urinalysis depending on operational need.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory procedures and data entry is required. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment are essential. Proven time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic setting are necessary. Recent phlebotomy experience is essential. The successful candidate must be adaptable and flexible in an environment that is subject to frequent change and interruptions. Excellent communication skills are required, including the ability to listen, comprehend, and respond clearly and accurately--whether in person, by phone, or in writing. The candidate must consistently demonstrate a professional, respectful, and courteous demeanor, representing the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology with integrity. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods. Frequent bending, reaching, and moderate lifting (up to 25lbs) may be required. Manual dexterity is essential for handling specimens and performing phlebotomy. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. May be required to work varying shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays, based on operational needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Training in Connect Care-Beaker and Rover is preferred. Recent phlebotomy experience within the last 6 months. Knowledge and training in EPIC-Beaker. Recent experience in using Rover within the last 6 months. Recent experience in a hub laboratory preferred.
