GENERAL STATEMENT Under general guidelines established by the Chair, and under daily coordination and guidance of the Laboratory Technologist III (Electronics), provides software and hardware support and maintenance for department labs, prep room areas and equipment and assists in laboratory classes when required. TYPICAL DUTIES
Maintains, repairs and calibrates a wide range of electronic equipment and equipment accessories including the diagnosis of faults or malfunctions;
Modifies and maintains computer system hardware, software, and related computer hardware as well as department servers and applicable network services including network hardware/software requirements, in the labs, prep area, and faculty offices;
Working from specifications prepared by departmental faculty, analyses, designs, documents, develops, debugs and tests computer software and hardware in support of courses, laboratory assignments and the departmental operation;
Using standard debugging tools such as software debuggers, hardware accessories such as oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers, tests a variety of apparatus;
Independently constructs lab apparatus or experiments from designs discussed with faculty;
Modifies, maintains, and operates printed circuit board manufacturing equipment;
Performs maintenance on a variety of software programs including installation, upgrading and testing;
Maintains currency in the technical field, including applying and understanding programming concepts in the lab setting, in respect to advancements in hardware and software development;
Communicates with suppliers regarding the coordination of repair and/or warranty issues;
Maintains appropriate documentation of tasks and projects, including inputting instrument repair and service records, as directed by Laboratory Technologist III;
Supports and participates in maintaining a safe working environment, including safe and proper handling of dangerous substances;
Maintains appropriate WHMIS documentation;
Ensures instructional labs, work surfaces, and equipment are clean and orderly and stocked with appropriate functioning equipment and components;
Assists faculty with the designing, testing and assembly of electronic devices for use in a lab environment;
Assists faculty in the preparation of laboratory exercises;
Assists faculty in the setup and demonstration of department/student projects;
Lends departmental equipment and components to students or instructors in accordance with lending policy and maintains appropriate circulation information;
Acts as a resource to students during laboratory classes and assists in the instruction of proper use of equipment;
Organizes and assigns materials such as lockers, text books, toolboxes, and stationary supplies (DND);
Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
Qualifications: Technologist diploma in electronics and computer engineering and three years relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A thorough working knowledge of computer hardware and operating systems including Windows together with a basic knowledge of networking hardware, software, and other operating systems such as UNIX, LINUX, C+, and Windows NT. Ability to work effectively with faculty and students and be able to complete a variety of tasks (multi-task) within given time constraints.
