This position has a term length of 8 months.
Location - This role is in-person at North Campus, Edmonton.
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Lab manager will assist with lab maintenance, equipment support and daily operations related to cell and tissue biology projects in Dr. Komarova's NINT 5-105 laboratory.
The lab manager will be responsible for lab organization and compliance, ensuring adherence to biosafety protocols, animal care regulations, and data management standards, will oversee cell culture maintenance, including passaging, viability assays, and standard functional assays, and will assist with in vivo experiments, including maintaining records, monitoring animal well-being when necessary and providing oversight for sample collection. The lab manager will oversee training of incoming students in laboratory safety, proper data recording and standard experimental methods. Dr Komarova's laboratory has 3-7 regular users.
This role is supervised by the PI.
Responsibilities:
Lab Management (80%)

  • Oversee day-to-day lab operations, maintenance, and housekeeping to ensure safe and efficient workflow.
  • Ensure compliance with biosafety, chemical safety, and UofA EHS requirements, including self-inspections and annual audit coordination.
  • Support onboarding and training of lab personnel, including safety documentation, SOP orientation, and core lab techniques.
  • Manage purchasing and vendor coordination for reagents, consumables, and equipment, including quotes and service arrangements.
  • Maintain lab resources and schedules, including inventory tracking, instrument bookings, and equipment servicing and maintenance.
Quality Management (20%)
  • Maintain and continuously improve ISO-like quality practices by updating SOPs, protocols, and training materials.
  • Monitor documentation, training records, and procedural compliance; identify gaps and support corrective improvements.
  • Assist with preparation and submission of ethics and biohazard documentation (e.g., ARISE applications, amendments, renewals).
Qualifications:
  • BSc or a Biotechnology degree in a related field of study with 2-3 years of experience in a research laboratory
  • Understanding of and practical experience with aseptic techniques
  • Knowledge and experience operating laboratory instruments
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture maintenance is an asset
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting
  • Sufficient written and verbal communication skills
