Estimated Range of Hours of Work: 0-100 hours
Appointment Dates: May 1, 2023 - June 30, 2023 (Lab times: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM)
This position is represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada - Academic Capacity Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide instructions to students, which may include explaining and demonstrating concepts and procedures, and clarifying subject areas;
  • Assist the students with lab activities and procedures; may help with the setting up, testing, dismantling, and storing of lab equipment and/or materials;
  • Monitor the condition of the learning environment, ensuring that all relevant protocols, such as health and safety are followed;
  • Maintain records; assist in the reproduction of tests, organize course materials, etc.;
  • May assist with proctoring/invigilating tests, exams and quizzes;
  • May grade student work (assignments, tests, exams, lab results, etc.) using specific guidelines/answer keys provided by the Immediate Supervisor;
  • May provide consultation and feedback to students on coursework, quality of materials submitted for grading, and other similar matters;
  • Attend training related to the assigned duties and responsibilities (e.g. WHMIS training, first aid training, etc.);
  • Perform other related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Completion of academic studies and/or relevant experience appropriate to assigned duties.
  • Normally an undergraduate student at the University of Winnipeg who has successfully completed a minimum of 30 credit hours.
  • Successful completion of required training.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, marking guides, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to meet specified deadlines.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with students.
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • The successful applicant should have completed the PHYS-1301 or PHYS-1101 course (or equivalent), earning a grade of at least B+.
  • Preference will be given to students majoring in physics and/or who have previous experience with marking and/or demonstrating within the Physics Department.
  • Applicants will be required to provide their current year\'s timetable to allow for scheduling of lab sections.
